It has to do with alloy solutions and lots of metal physics. You basically have two readily available welding rod that covers a bunch of alloys. One can be anodized any color, the other will always anodize black. Once you weld the 6000 alloy, it will lose its temper and be pretty soft in the localized area. Not a big deal for a shelfer/replica.

Superb build. 8) I was just looking at the start date of this project. You must have a lot of patience. Well done.

David does have a lot of patience, I know first hand, but he seems to always get the best for him in the end. I know he did when it came to dealing with me

Patience is key in this hobby if you want to get good results.

I found a NIB Airtronics servo that is probably period correct, not sure what model was used exactly, but I know for sure it was an Airtronics because of the 2 black and 1 grey cables featured on the box art picture. Maybe someone has more info on the release year of this one?

Today I rewired the ESC and added the correct plugs.

Has anyone figured out the box art antenna mount? Could replicate with nylon rod/tubing. I’m wondering if the heat shrink is holding coiled antenna wire?

My original thought was the mount would have a wide base for stability. However in this RC10 photo (no heat shrink), the diameter appears to stay the same.

Since the length protrudes from the body, it would get additional support from the hole, not needing a wide base.

I am going to try and find the right size tubing and see if it works. I will post if successful.

As promised, see pictures of rough prototype box art antenna mount. Next I will work on height and correct yellow shrink wrap. The nylon tube wall thickness should be thinner, so I will do some research on standard sizes. Wrapping the excess wire is tricky. I will need to experiment further on this.

I didn’t have much success making the antenna base out of nylon tubing. I couldn’t find tubing with the right OD/ID to match the Box Art proportions. I ended up machining the base out of nylon rod, incorporating upper and lower raised ridges (similar to a thread spool) to wind the excess antenna wire. I am pretty pleased with the final result.

It’s tough to add to the great work displayed on this site. I hope this posting is helpful. If you’d like dimensions, drop me a note.

Asso_man! wrote: Fri May 06, 2011 4:22 am I am a bit stuck on the build as I am too lazy to take out the dremel and modify the front kick-up plate (sanding the AE logo, rounding the corners and mill the two front tube screw holes). In the mean time, I found a brand new Sanwa/Airtronics RX that looks a bit closer to the box art one as this one says "balanced mixer receiver" where the previous one only said "2 channel receiver". The frequency, ref.# and color of the antenna wire are still wrong though, but that will do for now, I'm quite happy with it 8)

This is the receiver I settled on. It shows the Band 53 on the label, has a black crystal cap and Black antenna wire.
