I wouldn't wait much longer than 80K miles to perform the timing belt service, my friends wife's 2001 1.8t snapped @ 88K miles, and the manual states perform the service @ 105K miles  My 2003 Passat 2.8l has 65K miles and I plan to do the timing belt as part of the 80K service (doing the work myself). I wouldn't risk a 5V engine to save a few hundred dollars.

the belt needs to be done asap.

vw's are what i do for a living and having owned many 1.8t's i know what keeps'em going:

tbelt, water pump and tensioners every 80k
synthetic oil changes every 5k
plugs and filters every 40k
always fix whatever makes the check engine light go on (almost anything can cause that sucker to go off)
the 1.8t is a very cool engine, mine puts out 400hp, but they NEED maintenence.

edit, just noticed you got the elephant.

i almost bought one, but i'm going to wait for my great dane to get to full size before i buy a new car, in the end i bet i'll get an econline. lol big dogs.
