It's a bit like "Toy Grade Vs Hobby Grade" they are all TOYS! I hate the Toy Grade thing but I sometimes use it as it does describe in a way people understand. I guess Vintage is the same.

 Good point! I confess to using those terms because most people understand them, and also because "toy grade" makes a good thinly veiled insult  But yes, we are all just playing with toys. An adult playing with a toy car that has alloy shocks is not fundamentally different from or better than an adult playing with a toy car that has plastic shocks.

My wife just differentiates them as "big car" and "little cars". Technically, anything that isn't actually needed could probably be classified as a toy.

By that train of thought, my boat, fishing equipment, real race car, and most of my tools could be classified as toys.

My wife calls them toys and use to make remakes & wisecracks for them being childish. But of course the first time I let her drive one (along with everyone else for that matter), she immediately wanted one for herself. So now when she sees me on the laptop looking at r/c stuff, she comes up and wants to look for her own. So far the Tamiya Midnight Pumpkin has her fancy

Ten years later... Vintage and rare... still annoying. Especially rare. eBay single handedly obliterated that word. Nothing is rare when you can go online and point, click, buy as many as you desire. Yet, everything there is "rare"... right next to the thousands of others just like it.

Though... how few do you have to have for something to be rare?? (is it like a Tootsi Pop, four is to many?)

I'm not bothered by toy grade vs. hobby grade though. I rather appreciate the term. It separates Tyco/Traxxas/et al. from Losi/Associated/etc.

Ironically, a few more years and this thread will become vintage!

:P

Well... There is only one difference between our kids' toys and ours : the price... (and just to be clear, my motorbike is exactly like my rc cars : they are all toys)

Traxxas, especially older Traxxas, should never be lumped in the same category as Tyco!

I don't mind the various terms when they're used at least somewhat properly as they're necessary to differentiate things but eBay is the worst as mentioned. Everything on there is now vintage, rare, holy grail, etc... no matter what it is. It's just keyword stuffing, and very annoying. :?

Waiting to see someone sell their VW powered dune buggy as a gold pan...

...A stamp, of course. :P

I've said it elsewhere and I'll say it again. Just because something is vintage doesn't mean it's good. "Vintage crap is still crap."

Also 'rare' doesn't automatically correlate into valuable. Sometimes things are rare because nobody wanted whatever it is when new.

Yep... "just because it's rare, doesn't make it valuable".

Wild to think in one persons world, the thing really is rare but in another persons world, they can't move without tripping over the things.

Though, 'vintage' is so out now... the other day, I saw a thing advertised as..."SUPER vintage"...!

Yeah, I could pick up a sun-dried cat turd and claim it's "rare" just because it came from a particular cat with only that cat's particular diet with a specified hair content (of course established at the time of grading and/or appraising) AND it's "one of a kind" shape.

Still just a turd though.

That's how I describe the world after COVID.
