I don't worry about the motors, DC isn't affected by water. All I do when done is clean and lubricate them. If you really wanted to, you could pull a nylon stocking over the motor and ziptie it in place which will keep the muck from hanging up the brushes. you'll still need to clean and lube when you're done playing.
On this particular day the electronics were not protected and never got more than a drop or two of mud splatter inside the body. When I was fording the deeper areas I was cautious not to sling water or roll the truck.
Now, if I'm going out for a swim I'll just slip an 8" party balloon over the electronics with a ziptie around the neck. That's all it takes. You can do the same thing to servos if you're so inclined. One day I'd like to set up a Tupperware box for the electronics, but I'm in no hurry. My trucks don't get that much action anymore, just don't have the time or inclination to mess with them right now.

Halgar, that is sick, you should know better than to post something like that where kids might see it.
Got any videos???

goood pics halgar.. im glad im not the only one that likes stock clods.. dont get me wrong $2000 metal race clods are cool. maybe its the memories of my stock clod as a kid but i really like the fun factor of the stock clod.. oh and you said the water does not effect the motor...and i cant wait to hit the water now.. the reason i have not hit the water with a clod in years is cause when i ran my old clod in the water of my flooded back yard years ago the rear motor stoped working (it was a racing motor if that means anything) what do you think went wrong?? i was very young and just took out the motors and put the stocks back in...and when you say clean and lube the motor do you think if i used wd40 to spray all dirt and water out that would be ok??

Thanks for the compliments. Yeah, my trucks are stock/near stock, that's about all I need. The one doing the swimming is ModClod, which is a massaged stocker with my own homebrew 3-link suspension that gets 7" of articulation. The one with the purple body in the snow is fully stock with exception of the motors and ESC, that I've massaged the stock shocks to provide 3-1/2" of articulation. There's nothing pretty or precision about them, they suit the need, and that is all I ask.
You ought to swing by Clodtalk.com sometime and check things out. While Clod is the name, we talk about all MTs and RCs. I can direct you to where water proofing and other mudding info is.
DC motors are not affected by water, so getting them wet doesn't hurt them or the performance. What does affect them is silt in the water, which gets into the brush hoods and hangs up the brushes. A good cleaning and lube as you would any motor makes quick work of any dirt or rust issues. The way I clean a non-rebuildable motor (stock silver can ) is to run it on a dead battery in a cup of mineral spirits, then in a cup of warm clean water, repeat. Then blow the whole thing dry with an air compressor and add Trinity motor lube to the bushings. On a rebuildable, I take it apart and clean it in mineral spirits with a toothbrush (usually scr8p's or Hoopty's

). Blow everything dry with a compressor, relube with Trinity oil, reassemble. I don't use motor sprays because I've heard that they make the brushes brittle and more prone to burning. If you're not comfortable running the motor on a battery in mineral spirits, you can chuck the shaft into a drill to turn it and just hold it submerged with your fingers.
As for the rest of the gear case, very little if any water ever makes it inside, so I don't clean/rebuild the axles very often. What does get hosed are bearings, so I've swapped the stock bushings back into all the axles and I pack the axle tubes with grease to keep water out.
I did find an excellent dielectric lubricant that works great for electronics and servos. It's called Aeroplate Aerolube. You dip the components into it, let them drip dry and you're good to go. I've revived nitro onboard temp sensors with it. It is anti-corrosive, water repellent, lubricant. I've treated my RX and servos with it, but have not had the guts to dip a $150 ESC into it yet. Mtronics and others now have water proof ESCs available.
You might be surprised how many folks around here have Clods (cough cough the management team cough cough ). And if you weren't aware, 10talk arose from the members of Clodtalk who have the buggy bug and needed their own place to show off their buggy bugs.

Maybe not, but you know what they say, "the bigger the truck, the more trouble you can get into".

I didn't, I just chose not to comment. I'm not a dirty rotten perv ALL the time. But just for you, you don't need a truck at all, but you should have protection ...
