REALLY reliving my past - Hornet Build Thread

I am going to do my first build third with pics as I go. This is going to be a replica of the Hornet I used to race in my teeny years, as best as I can remember it. I have a couple of old photos that I need to scan and I also have some video I need to figure out how to upload of my BITD.

I picked a hardly used re-re Grasshopper for next to nothing. Took it apart and cleaned off all the dust. Right now, the only thing I really did was install a set of CRP Hornet stiff springs and find some Hornet parts to replace the Grasshopper parts. There wasn't a dirt track in my hometown, so we raced on the concrete or asphalt at Space Coast Raceway in Rockledge, FL (not there any more)..... hence the Bolink foamies. I was all about the Bling (at least what it was back then), so I always had chromies installed for every race.

The first pic.

Nice maybe its just me but a cars that are restored to there real condition i.e the ugly paint choice/aftermarket mismatched hop ups always get me in the sweet spot. Box art is nice but it cant stir up those memories like a original as it was used in the day.

Hey, I always liked my paint choices.... and really still do. You'll see, although everyone is entitled to their opinion. I post a pic of one of my schemes tonight.

I started a Hornet build this week as well. I had a NIB Hornet, bought some period correct hop ups from my first years. I'm still looking for a CRP or other shock/mount for the front. That is my last piece needed. My only problem is everything else is brand new on the car, I really don't want to put used shocks on the front!
You build is looking good. I took some pics of mine and I will post it tomorrow.

You see what's sitting on the table? This one was used and actually bent. I don't care about new or used parts. Again, this is going to be what I raced. A little wear is good.

My teeny year buggy would be a Frog with a stick radio. I beat the hell out of that buggy. I have friends from that time that still remember me runnung one. I would tell them that I would just push radio to full speed and steer  they would say no way yopur full of crap  . Then they see me drive and say damn  you really do

Oh, I see it  I really hadn't thought of building a "raced" project yet. I am displaying these in a hobby room in my new house. They'll get run once in awhile, but I like your idea of an as raced build. Great job. Now how much for that shock mount?

I have though about rebuilding my hornet from back in the day. I still have a bunch of parts in a box, although i'm pretty sure i remember a small electrical short and a flame, so I think my chassis is partially melted  Now that I think about it, I'm probably better off selling the parts and looking for a used one off of ebay.

Really looking forward to seeing this Jay, I mean its not everyday you see something from you that you have actually driven at some time - or are going to drive!! ;) ;)

In all seriousness though, I really do enjoy these kinds of builds, as they are just as much about the memories and the person as they are about the car.

Looks like you have a couple of nice hop ups there to Jay.

Cheers

Darryn

Thanks guys. Here is one of the pics..... actually the only one I have from back then. I don't have any with the Eagle body, but the vid I have is of the Eagle. Regardless, this was one of my fav Stingers from my good ole days. The other was a Skoal Bandit themed livery.

I will likely do both bodies, the Stingers w/Miller and Skoal and the Eagles I had were 7-11 and Motorcraft liveries.

I really like that body on the Hornet/Grasshopper cars. There is a ton of real estate on those old Parma bodies. They were fun to decorate with giant decals.
