How to recover darkened hard coat aluminium parts

For the normal aluminium surface, brasso or some polishing works. However for those greenish grey hard coat parts, is there any way to clean it without damaging the hard coat surface? Say , the dirty surface of an aged Paris tuned pipe?

One of our local racers uses this trick for dirty pipes. Seems it doesn't hurt the surface at all.
He gets antifreeze for a regular car and pours it in a small pan big enough to immerse the pipe. Heats it up to 150 degrees or so, pulls it off the stove and lets it sit for about 24 hrs. Seems to work pretty well for him.
He is a very anal fellow when it comes to car cleanliness.....
Every time he rolls up to the track, his car looks like brand new. He claims he makes "sweet hobby love to it" after every outing....

I can vouch for this method working very well.
