What's the Trick to.......

Ok, someone please tell me what the trick is to getting the pin out of the RC10 axles (with limited tools)? At this point I am willing to go buy something if I need to at a LHS or at Home Depot to get these freggin things out.

One reason why I am preferring Losi to Associated products.

Feel free to roast away, after giving me the answer first please.

They can be a bitch, especially if there's any rust. If it's not too stuck you can just pinch one side with needlenose and use the axle for leverage to pry it out. If that doesn't work you can use a pair of regular pliers and squeeze it through by leaving one side of the pliers just to the side of the pin. WD-40 might help loosen it.

The rear axles? I just use a decent set of pliers and push it through. If they are really stuck I have hammered them out (at least until one side is flush) using piece of scrap 2x4 to set the axle on (the roll pin just goes into the wood). I suppose if you're so inclined you could drill a hole in the scrap wood to receive the impending pin.

Edit: oooooooooooooo.... this means my guess was correct!

There is a set of pliers that have a slot in one of the jaws to allow the pin to go into.

I can get them flush after some muscle. Getting them out of the axle after flush is my problem. I am going to have to find a piece of wood and use a punch to get them out. This is taking longer than I had hoped and taking some of my steam out of my motivation (want it all, want it now.... just impatient).

I use a pair of needle nose vice grips, with the jaws set open just wide enough to push the pin flush when closed (better leverage that way). You can use a small piece of leather or something on the opposite side to keep from marring the axle. Then just pull it through with the same pliers (adjusted snug, of course). I usually grab it from the side for this part, using the pliers like a t-handle. You can also use the vice grips as a lever to pry out the really stubborn pins.

Had this problem many of times. I always get to the point where they are flush with needle nose and can't progress further. The trick is to use a large wrench, one that gives you leverage. The pin should come right out.

When they're that stuck, I've found a punch works the best; no damage to the pin. If you don't care about damage, use a locking serrated jaw type pliers such as vise-grip on the pin and just twist & pull...it will come out.

Congrats on your RC10 work :D .

Robert

i use a pair of side cutters to work them out, using the axle for leverage. works like a champ..... every single time.

now for the roast..............

ahhh hell, i'll give you a pass on this one.

I always use a pair of pliers, then when it's flush, I'll grab the pin in my vice, and either pull on the axle, open the jaws of the vice to barely grabbing the pin, and drive it out with a punch. they can be a real bugger.
