Kyle Reed '92 Roar Offroad Nats replica...

I haven't seen this one attempted yet, and I have a spare Pro SE gathering dust, so what the heck. I will probably be pulling from a lot of you guys here for help on finishing up the details.

I am trying to keep close to the car that Kyle drove, but I'm not going to kill myself too much on the details. Like the motor for instance... He ran a Trinity Chris Doseck mod motor, which this car has, but is a later model with a different decal. The front end on this car will be the biggest task, as they incorporated the XX front end onto this Pro SE. I plan on grafting a XX chassis onto this one to get the same effect. I do not have what I need to make my own arms, maybe I could get dynotech to pop something out for me. Until then, RPM will have to do.

I guess I will have to paint my own front springs, as I don't believe Losi ever offered a set of fronts in that color?

Does anybody have a used XX chassis and upper brace they would like to get rid of?
I also need a white "Team Novak" decal for the top of the receiver.
And a JG mini front bumper for a XX.....

.
The springs, both front and rear, that Kyle and rest of the team used during this period, were from Team Losi's special "spring box". There were more than twice as much springs to choose from than there were publicly available. The RCCA text said that the fronts were standard green, but with yellow paint, but they look different. Standard greens did have more turns than those on Kyle's car. The rears might be standard reds, but with yellow paint on them.

Shock towers have more shock mounting positions, 5? in rear and 4? in front plus four huge holes to make them lighter. Rear shock tower is also something like 1,5*thicker than stock Pro SE.

Very interesting project. The only ones left that has not be made here in RC10talk are AE WC stealth cars from 1989 and 1991! Who will try?

Reading the article it says the springs were the soon to be released red's. I think the front shocktower is an LXT that had been cut down and drilled. The rear I believe is a composite craft. I think I remember them having more mounting holes.

i say just drill a couple more holes in the rear tower you have and call it done. atleast one more on the inside. other than the holes, the one you have looks damn close.

i looked though my decals and didn't find a white novak decal like that. just an orange one. sorry.

i seem to remember reading an article in rcca about how kinwald used to paint all of his springs the same color so no one would know what he was using. since you were talking about painting springs, i figured i'd just throw that out there.

Yup, he liked them blue... I wonder what the best paint would be for springs? Must be a gloss, but somewhat flexible. But it's not like it's gonna see much if any track duty.

I think I will do just that with the rear bulkhead. Like I said, I will like to get it close, but I'm not gonna get too hung up on it.

The paint is the big thing. Next is the front end of the chassis. Then getting the motor plate anodized blue and then "lightened" on the Bridgeport.

Thanks for looking thru your decals Jay. I did the same, but my Novak sheet that would have had it was the only one missing. Figures.

PRP, I'm sure whatever you build will most likely be A+. You haven't disappointed yet!

I got what seems to be the right colors but not all from Pactra. Most of what I'm using is Createx. Basically Fascolor in a cheaper form. The pink/red is weird. I guess it is more of a fuschia..... The blue is odd as well.

how are you going to use the xx front bulk head?

My plan: Get a XX chassis and upper brace. (I already have the front bulkhead)

Mill off the front of the SE chassis and also mill 1/2 the thickness off the front. Mill off the back of the XX chassis and then 1/2 the thickness of it in effect to make a lap joint. Superglue the 2 together.

The upper brace will be the same way, except I plan on using some kydex as my upper brace. Then cutting the kydex to the desired shape.

Doing this will allow me to use the XX steering and front end. Hopefully it will work.

I would use automotive panel glue not super glue. that suff is so strong it will hold a real car together. it would do great on the chassis. I would feel fine about running it with that glue. not so much on the Super glue? just my 2cents

the one i have......... the "team" is white, but the "novak" is orange. it's the correct style/size, just that half of it's the wrong color.
