Checking Tempeture without a thermometer

I just took my RC-10(with a b3 stealth) for a run at the park for the first time with the Novak BL 10.5 . I drove in the volleyball area, but spent most of my time on very short cut grass. The motor stayed warm to the touch for the full battery(15 minutes). The gearing is 83/21 and my tranny is 2.40 so if my math is correct, I have a FDR of 9.48.
I am going to try a 24 pinion, but worried about over heating my motor without the use of a good temperature gauge.
Should I invest in a good gauge, or keep using the old school method?
Thanks,
ED

invest in a gauge and change pinion sizes by 1-2 teeth at a time max. i wouldn't jump from a 21-24.

Last time I raced at my local club some guys were using some stick on tags that changed colour or something to tell you the different temps. Not as accurate as a gun but they seemed happy with the way they worked and I bet they are cheap.

Temp guns are cheap enough now days I would just get one.

Are BL motors that sensitive to temperature? How hot do they normally get?
This reminds me of two stories/jokes:
- Some guys had a home-built supercomputer in their apartment, and they kept track of the CPU temperature with a meat thermometer; when it went to 'pork' it was getting too hot.
- Comedian Daved Brenner told a joke about a guy suing a hotel because he was taking a bath and burned his 'boys'; "who checks the water temperature like that?"

the manual on the Traxxas 3500kv motor says that you should be able to hold your finger on the motor for atleast 2 seconds. Hows that for a rule-of-thumb.

well........ it's better than having to stick your
tongue on it for 2 seconds.

after spending 20 years in construction i can pull stuff out of the stove with no glove so i will splurge on the temp gun i think

I guess 24$ is a small price to protect 150$.
Thanks,

That's part of the trick behind those guys who walk across hot coals for tribal rituals (or now for shows for tourists). Walking around barefoot more often is certainly going to toughen the skin on your feet. I can barely walk on my driveway without shoes on.
