I just picked one of these up. Any tips on setup or must-do mods before I hit the track? Also any good base setups to use?

The Tebo setup found on various sites is the one that everyone is using. You can find it on www.kyoshoamerica.com or www.kyoshoforum.com. The car is really dialed right out of the box, but every car can be improved. I have a set of B-fast diff rings and carbide balls in my gearbox, as well as the SP2 updates (the brushless motor centering kit), and the SP motor plate. I also opted for Lunsford turnbuckles, because my car was updated from the standard RB5.

The car doesn't NEED anything, as it's a great car from the get-go, but you could always pimp it out with a lot of cool stuff from Kyosho.

UMW512 ALUMINUM REAR SUSPENSION HOLDER

KYOLAW32
Low friction and longer lasting Delrin suspension bushings for the pivot blocks.

KYOUMW509
Ribbed blue SP motor plate for enhanced cooling

KYOUMW502
Allows you to run Pro Line/AE style rear rims on your RB5 or ZX5.

...and plenty of other goodies, too. A-main Hobbies and Speedtech RC are both good suppliers of Kyosho parts.

I got it and am now in the process of re-building it with a bunch of new parts.

Anyone know where to find the SP2 Upgrade Kit or do you have to purchase the parts individually now?

What wings are people running?

There is no "kit" as it were, only individual parts. You can buy all of the parts in one lump from speedtechrc.com, if they still have them. That's how I got my parts. Otherwise, you get the new motor spacer, the longer top shaft, the new rear bumper guards, the new rear arms and hubs. There was a new wing in the package, too, I think. I have all of the part numbers if Speedtech doesn't still have the parts upgrade package. It looks like they are out of stock, currently.

I have a Jconcepts Illusion on my car with the corresponding wing. There are so many wing options for the RB5 now, with different wickerbills, I don't get too caught up in the minutia of the differences. Get a big hokin' wide one and be done with it. I like the Jc one, so I don't have much interest in using something else.

Fresh paint, too...

I have been contemplating your original question, and after getting the car wired up last night, I realized that there are a couple of improvements I would make to the stock kit.

Whether it is the original RB5, the SP or the SP2, I think you should definitely get the clamping aluminum wheel hexes over the stock plastic ones. Add to that, the lighter and stronger SP motor plate is a nice upgrade, too. I am not a big fan of the 5 mm Kyosho turnbuckles, so I went with Lunsford Punishers in place of stock and a set of carbide diff balls with B-Fast diff rings. All of those will improve the car a nice bit.

Everything else is eye candy. :)

That's what I call a tight wiring setup! I appreciate it when people put in the time & effort to keep the "cable clutter" to a minimum. Beautiful!

Thanks! I hate bad wiring work in race cars. It doesn't take too much effort to do it right. You should have seen my 1/12th scale cars.

Yup I installed the aluminum wheel hex's on both the front and rear. I'm trying to track down all the parts for the motor centering kit.

First night I took 2nd in the SS A-main so I'm pretty happy considering I had 4 minutes of practice and didn't even setup the SXX yet. Great car out of the box. Goodbye B4!

I have an original RB5 and it's pretty much stock except for lunsford turnbuckles. It does well on the track, but I'm a crappy driver. I so wish for the days of old-school loamy tracks. I can't stand these clay "hard as concrete" tracks. :?
