When is car no longer vintage?

Post by RCveteran »

Just curious when you think a car becomes so updated it is not longer vintage. I am just curious.

I see alot of vintage cars with so much new B4 parts or other custom items to me they seem like a new car with a an old chassis in the middle. Not that this is bad.

I've got a project which when done I think I will have a RC10B4.1 with a gold tub chassis but not sure what I would call it. :)

Good question. I suppose it comes down to ones definition of vintage. I think of vintage as a representation. If I build a restomod from a 68 Camaro body, dropping it on a new chassis with all new components, it may not be original, but to me it’s still a vintage automobile. I think the same applies to these old RC cars.

Call it " what is old is new". Are they still vintage ? I would have to say yes. They all have the aluminum chassis , stealth trans, rear bulk head, RC10T front end, gt parts , all vintage to me. Some use the six hole shock tower and so on. Most of the new stuff ( b4 - b44) parts are, cvd's , rims, and front axles.

I think that for the most part, the updated parts incorporated into the old cars have functional purposes. Wheels of the old offset are not that available (well Duratrax and TTR, but durability is in question). So modern wheels makes it a lot easier. In order to run the modern wheels the modern caster blocks and hubs are used to maintain legal racing and good performance dimensions.

Another debate has always been when is a vehicle customized in a way that it can't be considered the vehicle you started with any longer? Take the the almighty Clod for example. With a lot of builds people just use the axles, and even then you can completely replicate them with aftermarket pieces. So can it still be considered a Clod?

In Australia the cut off date is set at December 1990. I think Japan is similar also.

Good question. Personally i look at it this way and may be slightly different for me as i still race my vintage proto. So long as the drive train is the same, wishbones, hubs, shock towers and shell then modding the chassis to go with the times, in this case Lipos and modding the slipperclutch to handle brushless motors then its still in that category. The rules need to be a bit relaxed as some of these cars can be fragile so slight changes will be needed.

All good points, we do not have a vintage racing scene here unfortunately so I just build what I like.

You KNOW, you don't HAVE to have a vintage class to run a vintage car.... :D

Interesting question. I suppose if you can put enough stuff on your chassis so that if you break something you can walk into any lhs and replace the parts without them checking the catalog to see if its orderable or if they flat out say that those parts are no longer available then its not vintage. Although I just did that for my TC5 and they said they would have to order, but that's because they said onroad is dead. I just say thank goodness for the internet and Tower Hobbies.

Funny the regional differences, we have a fairly good on road scene here but I need to go an hour and half out of the city to find offroad action.

And yes, I do plan on building a JRX2 out of all my parts to run in a modern class, I know I won't be competitive more due to my lack of skills but it will be fun.

ask this question to 20 different people, you'll get 20 different answers.

in my opinion, doing anything other than what is needed to run modern, readily accessible rims, the whole "vintage" thing goes out the window pretty quick.
