I was just wondering this...when I put my Turbo Optima in storage in the late 80's and forgot about the hobby, a lot of things passed me by. The last thing I remember was hearing about the new Turbo Ultima coming out that was supposed to kick the RC10's a$$. That came and passed.

Now, everything I see is a "truggy", a term I never heard before. They look fugly on YouTube vids, every one I see seems to be nose-up-in-the-air, butt-squatted-down, riding around with the front end higher than the rear...fat waffle tires splayed way out to the sides...

Though obviously I'm showing my bias and personal opinion, but beyond that, when exactly did the truggy become mainstream? And why?

Didn't it all start with the T-Maxx? I can't remember exactly because I don't pay much if any attention to those things but weren't they being called monster trucks in the beginning since there wasn't a name for them? I remember there was a subtle uproar over it until the phrase 'truggy' was coined.

I think it happened just after to 10T came out. Everybody started putting big tires on the front of there buggies and running truck bodies. They started calling them truggies. That is what I remember.

I thought 'truggy' refers to the truck version of an 1/8 scale buggy. At least that's what it means at our track.
Monster truck is still Savages, T-Maxxs, etc-- they have shorter wheelbases, sit above a specific height on full compression and have truck bodies (no big wings). Truggys (as marketed now) are basically 1/8 buggys, with maybe longer suspension travel and bigger tires. They still have the wing though.

From our track, the first one I saw was an Ofna.

Didn't Mugen offer the MSR Conversion kit for their buggy, and many others were based on conversions. Maybe Kyosho's ST-R?

One of the dumbest RC classes ever created. I was actually a little excited when I heard about the class thinking it was something modeled after a real life truggy class 1. Then I saw an RC truggy.

that's cool, rc truggy's not so much.

RC Truggies are gay! They are the new "helmet class" at the tracks, no skill required! Old "helmet class" was monster trucks! At least MT's were harder to drive fast!

I believe Ofna Jammin' made the first truggy and I believe coined the term "truggy". To the best of my knowledge anyway.

The first production truggy I saw was made by Hot Bodies. Most were using buggies with conversion kits then these came out. Followed shortly behind was the Jammin.

Truggies are basically a poor response from the 1/8 buggy producers on the succes of Traxxas' T-Max.
It was the only thing that they could come up with to cheap and quickly equal the performance of the T-Max

I tend to lean more toward the truggy being a product of Monster Truck fans/competitive racers wanting to combine two things that they love. IMHO
