Looking to Resurrect My Old Gold Tub, Help Needed

Hi, I'm new here. I have an old Gold Tub RC10 that I bought back in '86 or '87. I used to race it back then at a track out in Phoenix AZ and it still has an old Reedy Silver Dot motor in it's engine bay and the shocks from my old Kyosho Turbo Optima are still mounted on it, though I do still have the original shocks. Like many of us, the racing gave way to playing football, hanging with friends, interest in real cars and of course chasing girls. Anyway, I've been back into RC for about a year now. I race a Losi 8ight-E 2.0 in the 1/8th scale Sportsmen class at OCRC. But this whole time, I've had this itch to get my old Gold Tub back up and running, utilizing current electronics and making the best of the 20+ years of technological gains. I'm just wondering if there's a good set list of mods/upgrades that's available to upgrade these to modern electronics. I've got plenty of 2s Lipos that I can use from my Slash 4x4. I've also got a Novak GTB 3.5 Velociti motor/ESC combo that I can use that I was going to use in my old Yokomo Sedan Car that I'm going to resurrect as well. I've heard that people use the Stealth transmission to replace the old 6 gear tranny. Which transmission do I need, the one from the B3 or B4 or B4.1? Obviously I want the best one for my application but don't know if only a certain one will fit. Also, I read I can get some CVD's from MIP, are they still available for these cars? Are there any other upgrades that I should be looking into? Arms, shock towers etc.? I also want to use modern tires and wheels, what do I need to do to be able to use them? Also, I'm going to need a body for it, what are my options for bodies? Is there anything else I should know or think of doing as I get this bad boy back together?

One of the reasons I've decided get this car back together besides the fact that it's just a cool car, is because OCRC is opening up a second track and it's going to be a 1/10th scale OPEN WHEEL only track. It's going to be a smaller track than their big track, but it's also going to be more Supercross styled. I'm trying to gather enough interest in the old Gold Tub's to run a once a month Gold Tub ONLY class at OCRC. Let me know if you're in SoCal and would be interested in bringing ur old Gold Tub and race it there once a month. Thanks for all and any info you guys can give me!

Well first welcome to the forum. Second, glad to see you are interested in getting your oldie running. This site is an excellent resource for all the questions you asked, and some of them have separate topics in the various forums (mainly modern wheel/tire combos). Just spend a llitle time poking around (because there is more than one way to skin a cat) and you will find all your answers (there is a good search function BTW). As for the "stealth" tranny that everyone is refering to, this would be the original steath tranny that associated realeased to be used on the tub chassis cars. This tranny will require the least amount of modification to fit properly. There are those who have retrofitted newer trannies (e.g b4) into their tub cars, however they require much more modification to fit properly. As for power, a 3.5 is way too much power for a 2wd racer. You may be able to retard the timing, and turn your end points down, but rarely does anyone run below a 8.5 in 2wd. The cvd question will be covered in the "modern wheel/tire" sections. AS for other upgrades, this just depends on how far you want to go. Bodies -There are several people producing repro's of many of the old bodies (Mirage SS is my personal favorite), just look a Mr. Lexans threads, or check out e-bay for other options. Good luck and let us know if you have any other Q's.-Jeff

Scott, glad to see you came over from RCTECH :)

I have built 2 cars to run with modern racers, one with the original 6 gear tranny:

And the 2nd with the Original Stealth (not from a B2, B3, B4, B4.1...):

When I make it out to OCRC, I will bring both cars, and probably my Traxxas TCP, it is already complete and ready to drop on the track. I have to convert the Stealth car to use B4 rears, the first car (6 gear) is already done also, I just robbed the electronics for the Stealth car.

Post up some pics of how it looks now, then watch the progression into current Racer begin.
