With this bad economy, + anticipated $5.00 a gallon gasoline by summer, now we have bigger fines for traffic violations (To help California recover from it's recession)

The "Driving while using a wireless phone, not hands free" fine should be $1000 for each offense. If California is anything like NYC, they could balance their budget within a year on that alone.

If anything, the handicapped violations should be higher.

I think its awesome that some uppity trendy a-hole who swings into a handicapped spot to get his Starbucks can get hit with a $1000 ticket....

We could have the budget balanced within a year if we'd fire all the politicians and abolish the unions.

HI!... Just be glad you guys don't live in Canada. Our traffic fines are twice to 3 times that. Right now I'm paying $4.80(CAN) a gallon for 94 octane. Since our money is at par it's very expensive. Here, you get caught doing over 50KPH (32Mph) over the speed limit, you can get up to $10,000 in fines, lose your car for 30 days, and lose your driver's license for 30 days. Plus storage/towing/court fees. I won't even get into their stupid "STUNTING" law....... So don't complain. You yanks got it good.

I love that the fine for "failing to notify DMV of an address change within 10 days" is:
1. higher than either driving without a seatbelt or riding without a helmet
2. equal to the fine for blowing a stop sign (one of my pet peeves in the NYC suburbs!)
Shows where the priorities are - raising funds vs. safety...
Good stuff

We are currently at $10 a gallon (UK 4.454 litres) and anything +30 of the speed limit will usually get you a 12 month ban and depending on the circumstances a possible 6 month custodial sentence.

I have a CDL-A / tanker/hazmat endorsment. Get pulled over with so much as a marker light out and you are there for hours with inspections.

You should see what NC Motor Carrier enforcement is like ( I am sure there is 95% similarities ) They stopped me with an 18,000# plate with a 24' enclosed race hauler ( 85% empty ) and still did a full check, axle weights and contraband search. 1/10th of a mile from my shop, and all that they could site me for was "Diesel motor exhaust restriction non-compliance" Which meant, they didn't like not seeing the Cat, or the Turkey Fryer sized muffler not where they would have expected to see them-

after assembling my daughters wheelchair (in the rain) and pushing her through the parking lot, looked like i had jumped in a pool fully clothed. I know I have a biased view though
