When I was a kid, my aunt's boyfriend had one of these that I was not allowed to even look at sideways. I wanted one sooooo bad. Fast forward 25 years or so, and I had one brought to me as part of a box full of old R/C stuff that my next door neighbor wanted to sell to me. Amongst the remains of a few Blackfoots, a Monster Beetle, a Frog and a Marui, there it was, covered in grease and 20+ years of dustbunnies: a gold pan AE RC10. $200 got me the tamiyas, a mountain of parts, some old transmitters, one working receiver, an old Novak ESC, a half-dozen old NiCd packs, some timer chargers, a grocery bag of wheels and tires, a bunch of MSCs, and MY CHILDHOOD DREAM CAR. I'm still waiting on him to deliver the majority of the stuff, but he did bring the RC10 over for me to clean up. I'm not pushing him hard to get the other stuff here, the guy is only 37 years old and fighting off bladder cancer I have plans to get the Tam's up and running too, so him and I can run these things together out in the yard. He was a hardcore 1:1 offroader before he fell ill, and I'd love to have this stuff up and going for spring for us.

I love the fact that you are restoring it instead of replacing all of the parts with new ones.

Using the old parts shows respect to the history of the car. The mismatched rear arms are a part of its charm.

Great clean up job so far. What are you going to do for a body?

I'm not sure what it will get for a body. The neighbor used to run it with a baja beetle body of some sort mounted on the plastic wings that were bolted to the sides of the tub.

those wings looks goofy i was never a fan of the big bodies like that, always preferred the tight fitting protech 2, or viper bodies.

I think that's what I would prefer. A nice buggy body of some sort.

I do need to replace some things before it runs. It has a cracked steering arm on one side, and the spur looks like it has sucked up its fair share of pebbles. Any ideas on what to do for new spurs/steering parts? Can I swap gearing to more modern 48p? B4 steering bits?

Nice car ! I also like the fact that you kept the modifications to a minimum, just cleaning the car.

48dp : probably, but I'm far from a 6 gear specialist so I can't tell you for sure. m-vice did use 48 dp on this project :

B4 steering parts : Absolutely not possible. The B4 has the bellcranks mounted upside down at an angle, the servo is placed 90 deg. compared to a "B1", etc...

My 6 gear cadillac has a 32p spur, I believe, mine is definitely not 48p.

Nice clean up job. Can not wait to see the others once they are ready.

To get the factory steering you will need to check out ebay, or get lucky and find an old hobby shop with new old stock.

It is 32p now, I was thinking of changing to 48p if possible. Also, by B4 steering parts, I meant caster blocks and steering arms. A friend of mine on another forum suggested switching to a stealth trans. When I asked about whether or not I should really be drilling a decent-condition pan, he said he could get me a minty OG pan if I wanted to drill this one... ...so, it might get the "old is new" treatment. Sorry to disappoint anybody

After checking out m_Vice's build, it looks like it may be as simple as sandwiching a 48p spur in my diff.

Any fo the 48p solid axle style spurs will fit the 6 gear tranny. There have litterally been millions of them made by hundreds of manufacturers. If you are looking for a new steering system, I have a NIP black worlds system you can have for $15 plus shipping. I will even through in a spur. What type of motor are you running (stock, mod, in between). LMK via pm. -Jeff

Well, I know now how a 6 gear goes together now. It felt a little rough, so I took it apart and cleaned it up. My heart sank when I saw the condition of the pressed-on gear on the diff tube. Whoever built this car originally mustve used a 2lb club hammer to put it on. It spins, but it's still rough. I should have snapped a pic or two of it, but I got quite into the rebuild and the thought never crossed my mind.

Im quite happy to hear that the spur is an easy fix. Jay Dub, Im sending off a PM as soon as I get done typing this post.

As it sits now, things I need/want for this buggy:

body/wing/gear cover
some fresh bearings here and there
thinking about RPM/klein arms
steering blocks and uprights
possibly a stealth trans, or at least fix whats wrong with my 6 gear
some modern wheels and tires
new rear uprights
front and rear axles
turnbuckles to replace the threaded rods
CVDs would be damn nice

Holy crap, thats more of a wishlist than I thought!

it will be nice to run the cars with your friend when they all finished ben, there are so many rc10 parts on ebay and even more from member's on this forum you will have no trouble. good luck on getting them all sorted

Nice job, that cleaned up pretty good.

check JC racing on Ebay for drop-on 2.2" wheels so you can use modern rubber.

the following stuff is available new on tower, ebay, and many other places:
new body and wing
rpm arms
turnbuckles
cvd's
front hubs and axles-b2/b3/b4 parts can work if the right parts are all used.

steering-stock set-up is not available new, but there are a few options, including reworking some associated stuff, or a traxxas set-up, or nos mip/losi/houge/A&L, and a few others on ebay. searching on this subject will give you lots of options.

check avidrc for decent low cost bearings

keep your eyes peeled here in the BST, and ebay. someone sells clear gear covers on ebay, rear hubs can be found pretty easily(might still be at tower?)

the klein arms are kinda tricky.....if you want the 'worlds' type suspension, it's more involved than just a set of arms, so do your homework on that.
