Is there much info on this anywhere? I've seen the pic plenty, but I've never seen many details.

I've also been interested in the history of this car. Maybe it was a prototype before the first MIP kit was released?

It reminds me of those 2WD bicycles that appeared in the '90s.

Not a prototype at all but the 1st version of the MIP 4wd and there not only was a version for the RC10 but also the Tamiya Sand Scorcher or SRB. Might be some info and pictures on the forum as I know shodog has the Sand Scorcher version in his gallery. They are very rare and very cool.

Thanks Al, but I forgot how SICK his gallery is. I just relived it and I'm left with serious inferiority issues...

The system - as mentioned, was originally for both the SRB buggies from Tamiya and then the RC10. Later conversion like chain and belt were only released for the RC10.

I have an edinger and all the parts to build one - just havent gotten around to it yet. I hope to have all 3 conversions on RC10's when I get around to it one day, as I have all the NIB parts in boxes ready to go. Just need that elusive original first rear gearbox casing.

I've got a pic on my home pc of the same car and some more MIP info, I think it's the MIP car before the pan RC10, I'll dig it out when I get home!

Thats the gearbox casing I need to complete my cable conversion....such a bugger to find!!

they've tried some REALLY weird stuff in the 80's haven't they? Wonder what the efficiency of a cable trans like that one is vs. chain/belt... this is awesome nonetheless!

Anyone ever heard about the Magnetic MIP Transmission??? Darryn I betcha you don't have that one in your collection

There was a guy who owned a hobby shop on the south side of Houston in the 80's who designed and built his own hydraulic direct drive. It was pretty neat and was super fast on the ovals (the motor was off center). There was no physical connection between the pinion and the spur. It was a set a vanes that moved oil. He adjusted the amount of slip by changing oil viscosity.

He had 2 big problems with it. One was that it leaked and he could never quite figure out how to get it sealed. The gearbox was full of oil. The other problem was that the oil would heat up pretty quickly and the viscosity would thin as a result. He kept using a single weight rc car shock oil rather than a multiviscosity automotive based motor oil. Viscosity would have been an issue either way but not to the severity that he had. The car drove very different from the start of the race to the end. It was still a very neat setup that was very fast. Seeing something creative and unique, even if a bit flawed in design, is usually pretty cool.

Love stuff like that, "shed" project as we'd say over here!
