Tamiya Monster Beetle

Here is a new built Tamiya Monster Beetle I just won. This Beetle was built years ago and never run, I bought it from it's original owner and builder. It's a pretty amazing relic. The paint is not perfect, but it's decent. The only thing missing is a controller and the little pin that holds the battery door shut. For now I have it held shut with a zip tie. It's tempting to hook up a radio and take it for a spin, but I don't think I can do it. I'm pretty happy with this one.

I seem to recall those weren't painted; the stock Monster Beetles had hard red plastic bodies. We built one back in the day for the LHS we worked at, and painted it black with a nice orange-fade flame paint job. Or does it have a lexan body installed?

Either way, the Monster Beetle was certainly a great-looking car.

The early MB's came with white hard shell bodys.

Looks great!

This is the stock hard body. It's got a layer of red on it, I'd guess just one coat. There are a couple sags/drips, but nothing too ugly. To be honest, I kinda like them, they make the car feel very authentic to me. I thought about doing some detail work, window trim, door handles, etc. This one is so bone stock that it's still got the plastic kit bushings in it. That's a first for me, never had a car with plastic bushings. I guess they'll make it more difficult for it to roll off the shelf.
