Masami GREEN????

I just messaged Masami on Facebook about what green he uses on his bodies and he got back to me right away but with little information. He said it was a mixed color and he doesn't know the ratios. What has everyone or anyone found with their own testing to be the best match? Whatever color it is it seems to be always backed in white but it also sorta has a metallic look. I've tried two shades of green in Tamiya (bright green and metallic) and neither is a good match. Anyone else have info????
Thanks,
Jeff

Hi there,
I can speak only for cars pre-'95. The metallic green on Masami's early bodies painted by Takatani is not a mixed color. Takatani used Engine Colour spray can to paint the metallic green. Engine Colour is a Japanese paint brand. I don't think it is available outside of Japan. Over the years the company slightly changed its paint formula though. So if you buy a can today, unfortunately the green will be a bit different.

Cool, I figured Masami wasn't painting his own bodies so he may not even know himself. I'll keep trying to match colors from other brands. Let me know if anyone has found a good match with their testing!

Good info on the green. Who is Takatani? I thought Masami's Dad painted his bodies, or so I remember reading somewhere?

I'd take some very well detailed, clear photos of some of Masami's cars to a good automotive paint shop.
The colour matching abilities most of these people have is phenomenal,to say the least.
Get the store to mix some up in a single pack paint, then go buy several bottles of FASKOLOR and either ask the colour matcher to do his magic with it,or give it a shot yourself.
Hope this helps-I'll be doing a Masami style paint job on a '93 Works I just got.

That's not a bad idea... I know a few guys in the body shop industry - I'll see if they can mix some up. Thanks for the idea!!

Masami's green changed over the years. I painted a body for him at one of the Worlds and he just requested "green" as the main color with flames.
Here's a good pic of one of his 1989-era paint jobs.

That's exactly the era I'm painting for.... his 1989 Worlds YZ10. All of the metallic greens that I've tried are much darker than his '89 green. I'm going to try to do some mixing as well with Faskolor to see if I can get a close match. Do you remember what green you used when you painted for him back in the day?

There was a Pactra metallic green that I used to use in 2003-2004 that was really really close to that color- if you could add a hint of blue I would bet it would be super close

Cool, thanks Reggie - I'm going to do some mixing over the next week for testing so I'll let everyone know the results.

don't forget if the green is too dark you can always mix in silver to lighten it up.

I probably used Pactra Metallic Green out of a rattle can because I painted it at the track. A lot of his Takatani paint jobs from that era weren't very metallic, they were more of a candy/translucent green backed with white. You'll have to do some experimentation to get the look.
