I see many slick rebuilds. Some vintage, others new stuff. I'm curious...about how much do these cost? I'm getting the urge to restore my old RC10 (just need new 6 gear idlers), clean it up, put bearings in it and keep it vintage. However I'm also considering taking on a new stuff build. I don't want to get half way in and realize its going to cost more than I want to spend. How much is that? Not sure. Electronics will be basic, parts largely off the shelf easy to find stuff. Certainly not one of those tricked out aluminum builds that I drool over.

Hope its ok to ask about this. I see the parts lists and some prices, but never a final total on what they spent.

A rebuild can cost as much or as little as you want it to depending on what is broken and what you want to change. You can make a runner out of a goldpan with minimal investment using mostly modern parts if you wanted to. Check out my project x build. Only spend 30-50 at a time, then never add it up.


I decided one day to add up my whats old is new build and it was past $400.00. You would never think that when you look at it, but it adds up fast. I started with nothing though and had to buy every part individually, so if you have a base, it might be cheaper.

Good advice. This hobby is not for the faint-of-heart or light-of-wallet.

I was given my team car for free. It was in good shape. I guarantee the amount of money that I've spent on it over the past 6 months changing and upgrading things could have more than bought me a new buggy.

As others have said it all depends on where you want to go with it. New parts are expensive and even when their new they might have some blemish. I've replaced a substantial amount of parts on my New built 6016 because they weren't perfect.

As long as to stick to used, you can get some top quality pieces for pennies. MIP trannies for $60 when these sold new for $125. I've seen similarly rare parts go cheap simply cause their used.

I do the books in our house, so thats not a problem.

As I looked around and starting adding things up it certainly does get rather high. Mine is in pretty good shape, just needs some cleaning and new idler gears/bearings and it will be in great shape as a stock vintage car. maybe a new motor once I get the tranny running smooth.

I made the mistake of looking at the new cars out there. The prices are had to beat for the performance. Easy to find parts sure helps. That would scratch my modern itch and let me keep the RC10 as it was meant to be (and something the wife can use so we can share in my hobby...we'll see how that goes).

If all you need is a clean up and an idler/bearings,all you are in for is the cost of your time for the most part. You can get idlers (http://www.hobbyetc.com/item.cgi?part_id=8218) for cheap as well as bearings (http://www.avidrc.com/) for a buck a pop. I just rebuilt a six gear and it is smooth.

But then, you might decide, hmm, I should get all matching hardware (http://www.fastener-express.com/blue-aluminum-fasteners-for-your-rc10-all-aluminum-chastainlessis.aspx), and maybe some carbon fiber towers (http://www.fibre-lyte.co.uk/) or other stuff....

Yeah, it adds up. I do the books at my house as well, but the wife sees all the boxes coming in, she got wise to it.....

Ordered the bearings and idlers, now waiting. Question about rebuilding the 6 gear...is it a bad idea to remove the press fit gear? Any tips to get it off?

All orders are shipped to my work. No questions asked. However one summer the intern did ask why I got so many packages. Might have to bribe the kid...

If i had the cash i would order new everything for my goldpan, its a super stable platform to build on the turning radius on it is amazing. Also its easy to work on compared to some other cars i have taken apart.

never talk money, just spend it...
