Novak XXL FM receiver for use with Sanwa. Must it be Sanwa or can it have the Airtronics name?

It will work, you may have to swap the connector pins so + > + and - > - etc. Here's a servo pin-out chart I found for reference.

I slightly different question. The Novak manual states you must use the brand radio that the Novak receiver is made for or less than optimal performance is to be expected. Has anyone tried mismatched receiver/transmitter? The receiver I have will be in a shelver but I like my models to be set-up and functional but not needed to be race-ready.

you can mismatch manufacturers (tx-rx) as long as you use a matched set of crystals from the same manufacturer. I've had problems mismatching manufacturers between the same number on the crystals. Prolems including glitching to just not working...but never doublechecked the crystals themselves. Memory might be a little vague on what manufacturers but usually just bought a new set of matched futaba crystals or another rx crystal from futaba to match a tx I already had.
