First attempt

Okay, I know I joined this site to revisit my youth, see the awesome rides that everyone is building/has built, get ideas for my own. But I swore to myself I would only build runners. So I start taking apart the team car I picked up, gonna clean it up, reassemble everything and toss my radio in it. The more I took it apart, the more I realize, the previous owner must have only run the car a few times...had to be asphalt or concrete, the gouges in the chassis were pretty substantial. So, I decided to reshoot the chassis with some paint, as a touch up....well, about 5 hours later, here is what I ended up with.

That's a pretty clean looking rebuild. What are your plans for it? Runner or shelfer?

under that coat of paint is a pretty beat up chassis. I have gold chassis car that will be the runner, so this may be the shelfer until I get up the gumption to build a true shelf queen with NIP or as close as possible to NIP parts. I am having an internal struggle with what to do with the body...trim and mount it, leaving it clear, or leave it unmounted.

Nice cleanup JK Racing! I'd leave the body alone for the time being... but that's just me. There's still painted bodies out there in ebayland.

The only parts I am missing are the stock wheels. I got 1 destroyed rear, but both fronts, with very worn tires, glued on. I did get a set of rear HPI 2.0 rims in black. I think a set of alloys would be best though ! I know Duratrax in general isnt a liked name, but how good are their alloy rims?

Chuck the front wheels in a sealed container of acetone overnight. The tires will come right off and the rims should be fine. There are still some NIB front 3 rib tires floating around, they pop up on the bay occasionally.
2.0 TQ rear wheels have been pretty scarce in nice shape for a while now... I have amassed a pretty good supply of dyed, painted, and abused ones...

Been doing it for a while. If the tires are truly wasted cut them off down to the bead. If you're trying to dave the tires patience is the key. The tires will also take a few days to recover, they'll be really soft and swollen until the acetone evaporates.

Do at your own peril, acetone is fairly nasty. Use gloves, goggles, full hazmat suit, etc.

JK Racing, you need to reduce your image size for those of us without 24" monitors (or a whiskers type connection speed).

Images hosted by Photobucket now...sorry. Can I buy acetone in Cali? Or do I just "borrow" my wifes nail polish remover? I will look into the Duratrax wheels and post a picture, but I havent seen any rears lately, just fronts. The hunt is on....

My tip for the wheels if you don't want to use acetone would be to just boil the wheels for a while, 5-10mins should do it, then the glue with some pressure gives up and you can peal the tires off leaving very little residue. Slow and steady to not tear the rubber though.

Put the tires/wheels in the oven at 200-250 degrees for several minutes, the heat makes the CA glue very brittle and the tires should come off with a little effort. You may have to put them back in the oven a few times to get them off completely - it all depends on how well the tires are glued on and how thick the CA glue was applied. If you can't get a certain part of the bead free, put it back in the oven again. If you "force" it you'll probably just tear the tire and leave the bead on the rim. Be sure and wear oven mitts!!!!

I am going to attept the boil method this coming weekend. I have some of my race wheels I need to remove tires from also.
