So what am I getting into? What things should I look at which are known weak areas? Are the parts still available new from Tamiya since there was a re release or is the newer one totally different?

The Hot Shot drive train is pretty good.

Most importantly is it Ball Raced every where. ?? If Not all the gears , axle's would need replacing. As they slop out very quick and ruin the drive train.

The center drive shaft can strip the hex ends but the Re re uses a better alloy dog bone shaft with matching dog bone drive cups. Very cheap to buy but have to buy the drive cups and dog bones as well. Around $12 for both.

All the plastic arms would need to be changed to newer Re re if you are to run it as Marc said.

Chassis is better on the re re as it has a access hatch. ( Hot Shot 2) Normally the mounting point for the rear gearbox where the long screw goes through the chassis are broken on the original. As well as the Bumpers are a little fragile but a re re bumper are easy to get.

Drive shafts and drive cups as well as gearbox cases are different on the re re. You can use them but you cant mix them ( re re out put cups with original gear cases)

There are a few other differences but they are the major ones.

Yes the Re re Hot shot is still around as well as the new Re re Super Shot.

Hope this helps.

Mark

Nope I wouldn't be paying that.

That's one messed up shot to me. Looks like someone decided to mount the motor to the rear instead of mid mount. Steering is??? Does it run?? A large spur gear. How does that work with the internal Spur??

It's different that's for sure.

Any pics with the shell off.???

It's a Tam Tech-Gear Hotshot with a few hopups.
http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/item.php?product-id=56711

These are only 1/16th scale not 1/10th. They are nothing like the 1/10th scale one in chassis setup and have shared parts with the other Tam Tech-Gear cars.

They can be quite fun to run around inside the house.

You can get the re-re kit for about $200 & it will have all the 'fixes' that you'd want to do to an original. I don't think it comes with bearings, but they are standard Tamiya 5x11 and 5x8 (bext to buy them in larger lots-- I have done a couple 50pc orders as we have Hornet, Lunchbox, Frog, Hotshot, etc, but you can get in different/lesser quantities). Better from new re-re for a runner: center shaft/cups, one-piece dogbones, hatched chassis.

I have a couple runners and drawers full of parts, as I got my original kit for Christmas 1985. I spent tons of money getting one running a few years back, and then they re-released it... so my paypal account hemorraging was slowed.

As others have said, that is a TamTech and a pretty well used one at that. I wouldn't even consider 1/2 that price personally. Stay on the lookout!

Gee Sorry.

I thought it was a butchered up Hot Shot.

Thank you Brad for setting me straight. You are a wealth of information on Tamiya's as always.

Great to see you here.

Once again sorry I really thought it was a "normal Hot Shot" LOL.

Still wouldn't pay that price.

So is the only difference between this and an original the size? Wasn't the original a 1/10th scale?

Hotshot is 1/10 scale and only shares a similar chassis with the Supershot and Hotshot II. I believe future buggys reused the drivetrain and similar (but not exact) arms, etc like the Boomerang, Super Sabre and BigWig. They then completely changed up their 4wd with the Thundershot, Thunder Dragon, etc.
The TamTech line is 1/16 scale and based on the GB03 chassis and I don't think they share a single part in common.
