Motor timing and gearing

I'm using a novak ballistic 13.5 turn motor. Gearing is 21 pinion 88 spur. I left the timing dial on the end bell alone. Its set at 30 degrees. But I have people getting past me in the straight a ways. Not terrible fast, but still getting by me.
Can anyone shed a little light on this? I'm still trying to wrap my head around all this.
Thanks!

If the motor is staying cool during the race gear up. 21/88 isn't a very aggressive gearing. What Speed control are you using and what settings. I'm assuming your runing RC10, if not what car/truck?

Its a Losi XXX-SCT. I'm using a Hobbywing Xtreme stock ESC and Novak ballistic 13.5 motor.

I run 24/86 with a 10.5 in my XXXSCT, you definately need to put some more gear on there. Moving the timing will lower the torque a touch, it may feel mushy on the bottom end. Adjusting the gearing will also soften the torque a bit, but with a better feel. IMO
