Motor smokes but still runs?

Hello all,
I have a 6 gear Rc10 with full bearings that came with an old black plastic end bell silver can. I gave the motor a water-dipping break in, although I'm not sure how much it helps an old motor. When I drove the car, the motor gave very respectable performance, even though it got hot and began to smoke. I stopped to let it cool off, and after that, the performance was just as good as it had been before. Ambient temperature was low 70s.
I thought when a motor smokes, it means the brushes are fried! What's going on? Can I continue to run the motor without endangering the ESC or battery, which were both cold? Why is it smoking, and is there anything I can do?
Thanks!

being it's a silver can, toss it and buy a new for like 12 bucks

It would still be nice to know why it smokes. I've never seen anything like this.

I dont think brushes will make smoke, usually when they get hot the windings get shorted and you end up with some smoke. No need to break in a used motor in water bucket.

brushed motors are cheap nowadays. if your interested in why it smokes..take it apart and find the short

Stop running this motor. It will short circuit your ESC !! It will be too late when u see your ESC has smoke coming out.

If the ESC was getting shorted, wouldn't it get hot?

Once you let the smoke out it's hard to put back in.....

Could be anything, dead bug carcass, dried soda or glue, small leaf bits, etc. :)

If it's just a piece of debris burning, how can I clean it out? I already mentioned that I water dipped the motor, and I spray and lube it after every battery. Is there a more effective way?
