I was stripping down a few Optima parts cars I received in a purchase from another forum member the last few nights, and an idea for a fun topic came to mind. What unexpected diamonds-in-the-rough surprises have you found while going through a parts lot or stripping a parts car?

I'll start with the aforementioned 2 parts cars...they were pretty well-abused, but fortunately they were put together right. No stripped threads, wrong screws forced into holes they weren't threaded for, Mickey-Mouse fixes permanently damaging parts...but there wasn't much in the way of Optima surprises, except one had the torque limiter gear installed, which was a nice little bonus. Those sold for $30 to $40 each last time I found a seller who had some...and haven't seen any on eBay for many months. So finding one, instead of the original solid-shaft gear, was a bonus. :)

Also in that purchase was a partial Optima Mid. Not much of value was found in that car except for the rear belt diff assembly, with the outer gear in good condition. Those are desireable for Optima/Turbo Optima belt conversions and finding the rear diff with a nice gear is pretty uncommon.

A couple years ago I bought a huge mess of Kyosho parts, mostly Optima, and a mess it truly was...it arrived with everything loose in the box, nuts & bolts & parts flopping around all over...but I found a diamond in that rough, a nice Optima hard final pinion gear was among the mess of jumbled parts.

So let's hear some of your surprise finds of rare or desireable parts in a mess of stuff that you thought might be junk. 8)

a guy who races at the lhs gave me an old wooded military crate filled with parts for free, inside i found:

a complete stealth with 64pitch gears and a blue litesink motor plate
enough parts to build 1.5 clod busters
a belt drive gearbox for a schumacher daytona (sold to incredible serious for his project)
a bunch of white rc10 parts that looked great after the peroxide treatment, some sold to members here
2 complete blackfoot chassis in good shape
king blackfoot long arms that went on my frog project

there's still a ton of parts in that crate that i haven't even cataloged yet.

Once a guy sent me a box of parts. He said he didn't need them or know what they belonged to. I feel bad that I've now forgotten his name. Inside were a ton of used Optima parts. The gems? A brand new Kyosho Optima belt drive kit, an NIP bumper and an NIP hardened final pinion.

A box of 'ole rc10 "junk" as described, low and behold there was a stealth mounting jig in the bottom of the box 8) Too bad there was only a 6 gear transmission in the box and not a stealth

had bought a bunch of different bin on ebay all rc10gt related. Guy asked if I wanted a couple chassis he didn't know what they were and didn't know how to list them so he said if I paid a couple extra bucks for shipping he'd throw them in. Got a NIP traxxas n.rustler(no header card sticker to ID it) and a couple nice runner rc10 worlds chassis with nose pieces for an extra $4 or so in shipping :D .

I bought a box of Losi JRX parts, in a nice little cardboard box. Turns out the box was the stealth upgrade box for the RC10, other than turned inside out, it is (still) in really great shape. Oh, there were some nice polished RC10 shock bodies mixed in there as well.

Picked up a car lot, mainly for a graphite RC10 I could see in the corner of one picture. Turned out it had an MIP tranny, litesink, RPS steering, early Lunsford turnbuckles, S132H servo. In the bottom of the parts box, I found an early MTroniks brushless system as well.

I just picked up an early 1/8th nitro pan car....with just a quick google search and help from one member here, I think its a Delta Super J. I will tear into it this weekend and see what motor and pipe and other goodies it has on it. Its pretty dirty.

This. (upper pic)

I got:
- GP-10 front and rear gearbox with diffs with hardened spurs (one of those goes for more on eBay than I paid for the whole box  )
- various Kyosho plastic parts, including one normal GP-10 diff, uprights, three steering sets for the GP-10 and Spider, 4 Lazer front arms and 1 rear arm, 2 pairs of Lazer c-hubs, swing bar mounts, etc. + 4 sets of Optima alloy front uprights (1 pair lightened) + Original Optima front shock tower + One of those slipper-like things for the original Optima/Ultima
- GP-10 aftermarket alloy center diff mount and front axle mount, motor mounts + various alloy hinge pin mounts. Enough for four cars.
- Enough Kyosho turnbuckles for three whole cars, enough aftermarket turnbuckles for another five cars  + a whole lot of threaded rods
- A ton of universals: 2 Kyosho, 4 Tech Racing (with a set of spare dogbones) , 4 unknown, all for Optima/GP-10, 3 for 180mm wide Kyosho Spider, 4 for some other race car.
- Cross Inferno? brake disc mount, nearly unused.
- Paranoia aftermarket Optima alloy c-hubs and rear uprights
- Kyosho front one-way, Optima MID ball diff, Mid gear diff, mid front swing bar
- Tech? gold alloy diff outdrives x4 + loads of Kyosho stock outdrives
- Cross reinforced shock mount set for GP-10 x2
- Optima Mid Spur gear holder that allows the use of Kimbrough and other standard spurs - so those actually exist
- Various 32DP alloy and steel gears
- Complete set of alloy arms + swing bars, for GP-10 center shaft drive.
- Various aftermarket alloy upgrade bits for GP-10
- etc.
That's 60 bucks we're talking about. Best. Buy. Ever.

Also had a nice surprise with a junk lot (Wild Dagger/TL-01B/UltimaST/TA01/Blitzer Beetle/various bits box/wheels/bodies) last week. The Ultima ST Type-R in it turned out to be a Racing Sports (less nice :( ), but with a RB Evo front end (alloy kick-up plate, TC Pro shocks etc.) and rear shock tower + stack of spares and RB and ST bodies. On the other hand, the gearbox that was invisible on the pictures was included. The TL-01B turned out to have all carbon shafts, two ball diffs, and ball bearings. The Wild Dagger was all on ball bearings. The Blitzer Beetle was all complete with ball bearings, except a body, servo mounts, battery plate, and a dogbone, and in excellent state. Four turnbuckle upper links were included in the parts box, as were various ball bearings, alloy screws and nuts, a RB Evo hex screw set, hardened Tamiya outdrives, etc. :D
Now if the previous owner could have avoided putting Tamiya anti-wear grease everywhere and never clean...time to get out the WD-40...

Other than just getting stuff at low prices due to poor pictures/wrong wording/eagle eyed opponents missed something, the best 'gem' I've gotten was a missed auction.

I was bidding on a yokomo 870c JG oval truck conversion parts car, more or less. I lost the auction but was #2 bidder. #1 bidder backed out and the seller offered it to me at my high bid price, which I said sure to. What I got was an oval truck conversion with wheels, a complete car, with pretty much another car (minus a few parts) in spare parts, that were not shown in the auction. So I ended up with 2 yokomo 870c cars, plus an oval conversion, for around a hundred bucks. It was supposedly a prototype JG truck conversion car that was used at some national event, I have posted a picture of the truck fully assembled that the seller sent along with the parts.

EvoRevo's doesn't count because that's not a diamond-in-the-rough, it's hard to find ANY rough in that hoard of diamonds! I could really put some of those goodies to use!

Bought a tamiya blackfoot which looked like it was pretty gone from the pics.. body shell was all cracked (lexan)
When i opened it up it had a thorpe diff, crp mounts, shocks, bumpers, novak esc.. Not too bad for a gamble..

Hotshot comes with box, aftermarket bumpers, shocks & other parts that i could not tell from where.. $30 shipped
Another hotshot cost me $50 and it is like new, maybe run once from what i could tell. The rubber bag is all melted to the motor & missing the roof.

I couldn't name just one. Pretty much most of my collection came to me in an unloved state. Underneath all the dust and grime I've found countless 'diamonds'. Most of my greatest finds have been unearthed after taking my chances with purchases that could have gone either way. Kind of like a treasure hunt.

2 years ago I bought this BIN auction because I wanted a Wild One and they hadn't re-re'd it yet. I paid $200 IIRC. The pictures were really crappy so I was kind of worried I'd bought a box of junk. What I got was really nice but dirty Super Champ sans body which I am restoring now, an original Wild One in need of a bit of love, a 4WD SG Coyote that turned out to be nearly unused, 2 quite complete Blackfoots (blackfeet?) and a random 1/12 car. Also included were three Futaba Attack radios and some odds and ends.

yeah thats right i got a whole car and a whole 4wd legends kit in pieces along with the original associated box and some extra pieces too. the 4wd car did have painted arms and tub but acetone cleaned them up nicely. the car was rsa but the tub was scratchless once the paint was removed.
