Here's my SRB racer. I always wanted a hot SRB racer back in the 80's. So I decided to create one. I put this one together using Buggy Champ parts. The chassis is 2.75mm thick carbon fibre cut with a Dremel then filed and sanded by me. I made chassis lowering blocks for the rear and front castor blocks for the front. Castor is now reduced by 7 degrees. Kyosho gold shocks all round. All brass internal gears and a new Tamiya ball diff. The front is widened by 19mm and the rear by 10mm. Front suspension pivot pins are silver steel and copied from CRP ones. I also cleaned up the front arms and shock towers with a Dremel. No more light mounts and bumpstops on them. Super Champ universals mate to chopped Hornet axles and FAV drive hubs to widen the rear. I made the roll bar and added a 1.5mm carbon fibre plate to mount the shocks to it. Body is Team Bluegroove's MRP Mears shell with the back chopped off. i also made the wing mount side plates. They bolt to a modified Kyosho Maxxum rear bulkhead which in turn is bolted to the rear shock mount. The wing is Associated as are the servo mounts and battery cups. Proline front bumper, Buggy Champ front tyres and Eagle racing rear V spikes are on it too. Slightly modified gearbox housing so I can now bolt a motor into it. The rear skidplate bumper was handmade from kydex. Sport tuned motor, LRP Super Sport speed control, Hitec digital servo, and Spektrum radio gear round out the package. This is a runner and will be driven hard soon. Enjoy the pictures and feel free to ask any questions. Also the rear tyres aren't on backwards. What are the shocks you used here? How are they mounted on the back?

Thanks. I'm glad you like it Finman. Here's some more photos for you. RC104ever, the front and rear shocks are Kyosho gold shocks. Long rears and short fronts. The rear shocks are attached to a carbon fibre plate which in turn is bolted to the roll bar. The last photo shows this really well. Ignore the Yeah racing shocks in that photo. I'd also like to add that the wheelbase is 3/4 of an inch longer than a stock SRB. Enjoy, Chris.

This is a really cool project. Lots of very thoughtful upgrades. It makes me want to put some old gold AE shocks on my SRB so it's not so bouncy. I can't wait to hear how this one performs.

Interesting - I put some RC10 shocks on mine, front and rear and they work and fit very well. I also did the independent rear suspension setup from RC Channel. On the rear of mine, I drilled holes (not that well I might add, lol) in the roll bar but your solution is much more elegant.

Do you have a ball diff in the rear?

May I ask why you prefer to reduce the front castor??

That's a good idea MelvinsArmy. I'll post a running report soon. Post some photos when yours is finished Rich. RC104ever it has a Tamiya Buggy Champ ball diff. That's a great looking SRB Tiger1. You've got a lot of great parts on it. I thought I would try the castor blocks to see what effect it has on the handling for myself. RCH made them back in the day and forum member Y'ernat Al has some homemade ones on his SRB and says they stopped the front suspension bouncing around as much as stock. The castor is reduced using them but the shocks are in a more vertical position and apparently the suspension works better this way. I've attached a photo of mine so you can see the how they are sandwiched between the chassis and shock towers. Chris.

This is what it's all about. Race cars son!! Just like back in the day, a ton of go fast parts and put it on the track!!!!!

I ran the SRB in my backyard on grass today and I am extremely pleased with the end result. It handles pretty much how I wanted it to. At low speed it turns in well and at higher speeds it understeers slightly. Back off the throttle and it turns in quickly. It's very stable even with the swing arm rear suspension. The one thing I was worried about is that it might traction roll. SRBs are really good at doing this especially on higher grip surfaces. Well, I gave it full throttle and turned in and no traction rolling. Having the battery run down the chassis instead of across seems to cut out a lot of the chassis sway in the turns. Also by using lowering blocks the CG has been lowered by a fair amount and definitely contributes to the handling. The big shocks soaked up the bumps really well too. Even running in a straight line is a huge improvement over my Buggy Champs handling. The following pictures show how much lower, longer and wider the SRB racer is compared to an almost stock Buggy Champ. Thanks for looking, Chris.
