What type/brand of modern ESC for brushed motors can you recommend and have experience of? Forward only if possible and low resistance…

Traxxas has some - and I think they have reverse lockout.

I know with the Castle stuff you can lockout reverse but I don't know if you can use it with brushed since it has 3 wires, I never tried.

TEKIN FX PRO. Best esc's ever made. Nuff said.

performance-wise, best is tekin fx pro and the misc variations of KO's VFS, the later versions (Hara twister, corally mms2, others).

timeless choice: novak cyclone, will never die, cheap nowadays. the mother of all brushed speedoes...

My fav is the Novak Super Rooster by far, but the Cyclone is a close 2nd due to the fact that you can program it. There's no motor turn limit on either of those.

The 1st gen Castle sidewinder can do brushed or brushless and I like their Castlelink programming card and software however, the manual states there's a motor limit of 19t

You mean corally MMS3
The MMS 2 still was an original Corally/Philips design, beginning with the MMS3 they used KO VFS technology.
