I picked up an Integy Mod-Fashion Lathe last week, bought it new. I consider my self pretty mechanically inclined and able to figure out a lot of things....but I'm not understanding how the bit is supposed to sit in the holder. The ip os brazed to the bit, so it's only going to sit and cut properly one way. I will be calling the mfg'r tomorrow, but thought I'd ask here as well. Eric

Well, I got it figured out all on my own. I reversed the direction of the motor. This makes sense since the cutting edge is on the bottom of the bit, not the top like I'm used to. Works like a champ. Now I just need a reastat (sp?) andhook it to my power supply. This way I can control the mtor speed. Right now I have a 2 cell 1700 SCR set up running it. Speed seems good, but charging packs to cut comms is a PITA. My power supply will make it much nicer. These lathes are on Integy's website fro $20! If you've ever wanted one to refresh your old motors, jump on it. I picked up a load of brushes and springs as well.

the comm should rotate "away" from you and the bit should be very slightly above the middle... in other word if you pinch a piece of lexan between the comm and the edge it should lean away from you.

also check the hudy site, there used to be a lot of stuff on it.

Most of the stuff I've learnt about cutting comms last millenium (and I was pretty darn good with a comm lathe) I also learnt from John Stranahan, google him as I know he's written a lot on the topic on the web

If you are mechanically inclined, it should be a breeze

one more watchout... as it's a used lathe and it doesn't take much to take them off-alignement, check that both v-blocs are perfectly parallel and that the bit moves 100.00% parallely to the comm...

as said, it doesnt take much to throw a lath off-aligment

Cutting comms is cool. There's a truly climactic feeling to take something that look like a chunk of burnt metal and turn it into a satin-like piece of jewelry from outer space

Cool lathe, I picked up a Cobra Procom recently for cheep but I'm having the same issue with battery power as you. What power supply are you planning to use? I'm passing on the Cobra power supply since it's mega pricey

I have a 12v/12A power supply I've had for yrs.

Cool thanks for the info. I knew I need >5v for the Cobra, but I had no idea how much amps would be required. Any idea what the minimum amps would be for a 27t motor?

I would use the 5 volt tap of a computer power supply. Maybe with a bulb or 2 attached to bring the voltage down a little further. If I remember correctly many people used a 4 cell pack 4.8v. That may be to fast for some.

I'm using two 1700mah, 1.2v cells, it's about perfect.

Do you mind if I ask you where did you buy it? I would like to get one, I have a couple of Reedy motors I want to bring back to life.
