Silly question about flanged bearing specs

Does the measurement of the outside diameter mean the BEARING'S O.D. or the total O.D. including the flange? I'm guessing the measurement doesn't include the flange as that's not technically part of the bearing. So, if I buy a 5 x 10 x 3 flanged bearing, this will fit inside a 10mm hole with the flanged part extending beyond the 10mm hole. Therefore, the O.D. of the flange itself isn't usually included in the bearing's specs. Is that correct?

bearings are sized by the OD, NOT including the flange dimensions. So a 5x10mm flanged bearing would fit in a 10mm hole. If you are dealing with something really oddball, it is best to check how the bearing is used, and if you can find a mechanical model to check the dimensions.
also bear in mind that a 5x10 flanged bearing will sit above a surface, vs a non-flanged bearing that will sit flush. so the overall width needs to be taken into account for axle lengths and such.

Thanks, that's exactly what I needed to know!

What are you working on?

The Duratrax wheels I polished up and a few other aluminum front wheels that have various sizes of holes for bearings. The Duratrax fronts have an 11mm diameter hole that goes straight through the wheel, there's no niche for a bearing to press against, so it'll need 4x11mm flanged bearings to fit my buddy's Buffalo. I also have 2 sets of aluminum JPS 5-spoke wheels, the exact same design but they accept different-sized bearings. I haven't polished those yet.
