Compatibility between TRX-1, TRX-3 & Blue Eagle Transmission

hello All,

I recently received a Traxxas project car and I had questions about the differences / similarities between the TRX-1, TRX-3 & Blue Eagle transmissions. Based on pictures I've seen, the trans that's currently in the car is from a blue eagle. It has the older slipper that uses the friction pegs and the ball diff that can be adjusted from the outside using the allen wrench from the top.

Ultimately, I would like to convert the car into a TRX-1, but I only see TRX-3 parts (gear box, idler gear) on ebay. How similar is the TRX1 gear box to the TRX-3? Can I use the internal components of the trans in the TRX-3 case?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Roger

internals are all the same from the trx1, trx3 and the blue eagle. Cases are different between all 3 going from part numbers 1991,2691 and 2791.

Roger, pix are also a good thing. Gotta see some more action in the traxxas section

Actually the Trx1 and Trx3/TCP share the same internals but uses a different case while the blue eagle(ls is the only 1 I know) uses the traxxas 272 magnum transmission which uses the same internals and case as the hawk2,rad2 ls2, SRT and even the metal gears from the rustler fits (transmission case is different). Now you can use a associated rc10 45 t diff gear in the trx1/3 and the idler from the Eagle/SRT/rustler (just put bearings in the gear and leave the ones in the case and run the shaft) bc they both are 30t. Only the top gear in the trx1/3 is unique (21t) and the eagle/srt/rustler (22t) cannot be used. I hope this helps!!

Emmaxx has some good info there.

the trans cases were all different.

the idlers are the same(tooth count anyway)

the trx1/trx3 used a unique top gear, all the other trans used the same one.

the diff ratios are different so the eagle trans uses a larger diff gear.

they all fit I believe in the same footprint.

I have seen the trx1 trans case on ebay from time to time, probably from the same seller, and reasonably priced.

the hardest part will be to find the motor plates for trx1 and trx3.

yeah, my bad. The blue eagle bumped up to a 22 tooth top gear vs. the 21 tooth top gear the buggys had

Are you only basing the trans identification on those things? Reason I ask is because all three of them had the older friction peg slipper and diff adjusting access hole.

Like the others said, the TRX-1 and 3 had all the same internals. The only internal parts that are shared between the buggies and the trucks would be the bearings, ball diff (minus the diff gear of course) and the top shaft. As EMaxx2.0 noted, the idler gears can be interchanged, but are still a bit different aa the truck trans uses bearings in the idler gear and the buggies have the idler bearings in the trans cases.

Yea I'm becoming kept good at this vintage stuff. I'm learning more about them then I do with the newer stuff. I miss the old days of Associated vs Losi vs Traxxas. Now look how many buggy are out there :'(.

The TRX-1 case has 'TRX' molded into it on the side opposite the motor plate whereas the TRX-3 case does not.
The TRX-3 trans also has a slightly lower CG due to the diff gear being closer to the chassis. I mean literaly you can almost see it through bottom of the case when assembled. Really subtle differences though. Pretty much they need to be side by side to notice. Maybe this helps distinguishing between those two definitively. I go full nerd with this sort of stuff.
