Yokomo Works '91 Drescher Edition

Hello all,

I present to you my freshly restored Yokomo Works ‘91 Drescher Edition. Most of you will know that Yokomo did not make a Drescher Edition and it is in fact a Yokomo Works ’91 with a conversion kit centred around a change in front suspension geometry designed by Craig Drescher and CML (much like JD Beckwith of the USA with his Dukomo conversion kits).

I have taken this quote from Dirt Racer over at TamiyaClub:
“Reason the Drescher edition came about was because mainly of the shock mountings especially the fronts and also those wishbone design and material, it was used and designed mainly for him and then everybody wanted them because the wishbones were a lot stronger, and so all the mods that Craig D used was used as a signature for selling the Mod kits”

I have been looking for a Drescher Edition for a long time now and you could even say it has become somewhat of a ‘White Whale’ search for me. I have seen only a few for sale and of them, even fewer in good condition with all the correct modifications and option parts that were used back in the day on the Team Cars. I could not believe it when I saw this car come up for sale as not only did it look in good condition, it had most of the Drescher and Team parts installed on the car. Upon receiving the item, I was impressed with the condition of the car with the only issue being that most of the hardware was rusted out. After disassembling the car, I believe that this car was hardly if ever run on a dirt track… Indoor, AstroTurf and even Grass but not on dirt.

I have listed below the Drescher Edition modifications and also some Team parts that came on this 'Drescher Edition'-

CML11: Yokomo Short Front Wishbones. Uses Kyosho OT55, Kyosho OT16 and CML02s Short Tower for improved steering.

CML02s: Yokomo Short Front Shock Tower

FAST27: Machined Nylon Left Side Steering Bellcrank. One piece design eliminating the servo saver spring system of the stock bellcrank. Fully ballraced.

CML15: Yokomo Rear Stock Wishbones. Manufactured from high grade nylon for no flex and improved performance.

MMS Y1: Machined Nylon Front Bulkhead. A popular option part used on many Yokomo's not only in England but throughout Europe.

Heatsink Motor Mount (possibly MMS Y3): A lovely item especially for the time. A popular part in the European racing scene. A true functioning heatsink.

MMS Machined Nylon Rear Bulkhead: This car originally came with an aluminium rear bulkhead but I swapped it out for the machined nylon version. I have had this part for a while and thought this was the perfect car to use it on.

Custom Chassis and Top Deck: I do not know the origin of the chassis and top deck. The design and geometry of the chassis is identical to the Works '91 chassis with the obvious exception being the cell layout/configuration. I vaguely remember reading a Hansell Composites advertisement in a Radio Race Car magazine about a Phil Booth designed chassis for the Yokomo with a revised cell layout and custom top deck. Maybe someone here on 10Talk has seen this chassis and top deck configuration before?

It was a real pleasure assembling this car :D This was essentially CML's and Craig Dreschers answer to the stock Works '91. As you can see, there are not too many parts from the original Works '91 left on this car. Thank you Slow Jun for helping me load the photos correctly. I Hope you enjoy them.

Feel free to leave comments and questions. Here are some links for some other fine examples of the Drescher Edition over at TamiyaClub-

it's always great to see a yokomo that does away with that coat hanger linkage on the servo savers.

Code: Select all

it's always great to see a yokomo that does away with that coat hanger linkage on the servo savers.
8) it was one of the first items I noticed on the car. It is almost customary to see that wire linkage over the servo savers.

Thanks for all the kind words.

It was a pleasure to build and is probably one of my favourites. I have always been drawn more to these conversions/option parts. I always liked seeing racers with heavily modified cars that were tuned to their liking. This heavy modifying was more prominent with the 870C model but even so, the car in the pictures shares few parts with the Works '91 which was no slouch to begin with.

Very nice, I like how the carbon fiber weaves are aligned on the various parts.
