Great article, funny too, but certainly made me think a bit about how much I discuss my car enthusiasm with non-enthusiasts.

What does this say about discussing RC cars and trucks with people who don't even have a passion for full scale cars?

When people stop babbling at me about movies and TV shows and celebrities that I literally could not possibly care less about, then I'll shut up about "washing machines."

Besides, if you've never been through a really great spin cycle, hitting that rinse at exactly the right moment, feeling the surge as the fabric softener hits, you just don't get it...

Well the general public doesn't care about cars like they used to. The automobile has been around for a long enough time now that they've become an appliance to society. All your average person cares about these days is fuel economy, safety, and how many gizmos it has.

Sadly, there even seems to be a bit of a waning interest in old cars. Every year that passes, classic cars increasingly vanish from the roads. One problem is that all of the old guys from the time periods who have kept it alive are passing away now, and the new generation doesn't have much interest. There have been several long standing car shows around here that as of recently no longer take place due to poor turnout from both entrants and spectators. Also, it doesn't help that the prices for parts have also become simply outrageous. I'm sure it's due in part to the ever increasing lack of demand. I flip through the catalogs and am just blown away by what these companies get off asking. Then to add insult to injury, The quality of the parts suck compared to the prices you pay. It feels sometimes like it's becoming a niche hobby for the rich.

my gf (who is a just a tad younger than me...) doesnt have a license, and im amazed by it. getting that drivers license for me was something i looked forward to more than almost anything else in life. it was freedom...

I have two young cousins (both male, 19-20yrs-old) who don't have licenses,
they're just not interested... It baffles me

I got my parents' car impounded like three times
for driving before I was even old enough to get a license

I usually read jalopnik on a daily basis but no clue how I missed this. Im a fan of the Nice Price or Crack Pipe, Morning shift, Answer of the day and conversation of the day series.

behold the power of social media and the internet. why go anywhere when you can talk smack through the keyboard or facetime your frenemies?

Drivethru bottleshops were the best, they never bothered asking for ID.
And if you bought by the slab they'd even help load it into your boot.

So true., Im amazed as is my Son that none of his college friends care even one bit about cars or driving, Most say that hate cars and driving.. Blows my mind...

Brings back good memories.... When I was 14-15, my parents used to attend my younger brothers basketball games several weeknights during the winter. After they were good and gone, I'd find the spare key to the good ole Oldsmobile 98. After marking where the front wheel was sitting and noting the gas gauge, I would proceed to pick up a couple of my buddies for a joy ride. Both who's parents asked "Bob already has his drivers license?"

After some donut sessions(and not the Dunkin kind) in the Jr High parking lot and laps around town, I made my way back home with enough time to open all the doors and hood to let the heat dissipate from the car. I had to use wintertime to my advantage.

I told my parents this story years later much to their surprise!

Funny how things have changed so much since I was a young lad. When young, my friends and I rode our bikes constantly and overtime during the summer break. As a teen my car hardly stopped rolling. It was nothing for a hundred or so cars to be out cruising on a Saturday night in a small town.

My first hit was off a 64 Malibu SS four speed of a family friend. Then I bought my first baggy a 57 chevy four door station wagon. I have been hooked ever since 1967.

I have been probably the worst offender of talking R/C jargon, if you want to have a lengthy conversation about how important the use of a proper thickness of ca glue is, i am your guy.
