well, i FINALLY bought a rere hornet kit last night to do it. omnimodels twisted my arm with $109.99 shipped and i couldn't pass it up. i should be able to make some of that back selling off everything else i don't need from the kit too.

I have a pair from twinn-k for tamiya axles. Awhile back I was using my midnight pumpkin to get an idea of the wheel base, and it seems like ill have to run them on the inside of the wheel to narrow the rear up enough to body width. Ill have to spray them black though.

I'll be watching this with interest. I had one as my first car. If you can get it to handle at all I will be impressed.

Back in the day I was a penniless school kid racing a second hand Cat XL/Procat hybrid at a very low-key indoor carpet track. After I snapped both chassis decks in half, it took me a couple of months of paper rounds to save up enough to buy a replacement. In the meantime I wheeled out the old Hornet, replaced the shocks for solid threaded rods and slammed it as low as it would go. Fitting foams to the rear was easy enough, but the fronts required I think a pair of the middle sections to be glued together to then mount they foam to - I'll need to dig them out of one of my boxes to remember exactly what I did to them.

Surprisingly it was actually pretty good and with a 14quad motor was frankly ridiculous. I never tried a full body shell though - that would have been soooooo cool.

very cool. hornets/hoppers will always be one of my favorites.

speed won't be an issue as it's so easy to make these cars rockets.

That "outside in" trick is what they did in the "on road turbo ultima" to narrow its rear end also. Not that you give a flip about any Ultima knowledge.

The kit showed up today. I also unearthed the grasshopper II front arms I've had for years in anticipation of this build.

Almost 7 years in the making. This better be good.

There's nothing quite like those on-road/oval builds from the old mags. Nothing like today's conversions which consist of a Slash with a late model body slapped on top.

Love those old on-road conversions. I remember seeing this article, but not the details; did they flip the front arms over? That's the quickest way to lower the front end.

Edit: yep, guess I should read the article before making suggestions...

well one thing is for sure, the grasshopper II front arms flipped upside down and left to right fit in the chassis. but does the article tell you that you have to wedge them in there so much that it bows the front of the chassis? NO!! i guess proper clearance, or mentioning that there is none, isn't needed when you lock the front suspension.

i was debating trying to add small pan car springs between the heim end the chassis shock mount. that way you could actually adjust the front end a little bit (if i actually used the car and wanted to tune on it). but i'll have to make some room by either clearancing the tub or trying to heat and bend the arm so they swing freely.

Any update on this?

not yet, i always hop around with what i'm working on.

i did run into a slight snag awhile back which is why i stopped on it. i got the longer gh2 front arms but didn't get the longer steering arms to go with them. jay hooked me up with some that should work, but i haven't got back on the car yet to find out.

the whole back of the car is together though. gearbox is built, shocks installed, etc.
