Not the pin for the axle that engages the wheel, but the pin that actually holds universal mechanism together. It has backed out and has gone missing from one of my universals for my DS. As replacements seem to be none existent as well as CVD's, what could I possibly use to replace this simple pin that holds the universal together?

The pin that inserts through the dog bone into the rotating block of the joint.
It looks like just a piece of rolled steel. Appears different in size from the axle pin. Any suggestions?

i didnt think those could even come out myself. I'm not sure you could replace the part or not. My only idea would be to get some metal rod that is about the same diameter as the pin. cut slightly longer than needed, insert into the Universal and crush until the rod is bigger than the holes at the end. Most hobby shops ive seen seem to have one of these assorted rod sets that come with many sizes so i'd think one would fit. For reference, I have a 20+ year old UJ that I'm still running without problem.
MIP still makes a cvd kit for the rc10. Its MIP 1007, they can found on many sites an ebay. This is probably the easier route b/c they are rebuildable in the end.

I would rather have CVD's than the stock universals. but this is a RC10DS road racer not the buggy. much shorter dog bones. I haven't been able to find either the stock uni's or CVD's. im sure I could fix the uni's as you suggested or just find CVD bones that are the same length and just put together my own set. just trying to spend as little money as possible.

I would think you could find a roll pin that would do the job. Any decent hardware store will have a selection of them.

It should be a pretty hard pin if you can find it. Easy to find at McMaster Carr or maybe sears hardware. Just check the other one for size with a caliper. It will probably be a standard size like 5/64 or something like that.

Why not just steal the pin out of a buggy universal?
Or make one from piano wire..

well, I was unable to find a pin the proper size. So I just took an old allen key that had a slightly larger diameter and ground it down smooth between a pair of pliers. Then pressed it into placed and snapped the excess off. worked like a charm. I didn't think piano wire is strong enough but that Idea lead me to the allen key. hope it holds up. it took a considerable amount of force the press the home made pin in. i doubt it's going anywhere.
