Well maybe a little. . .
I went to get some parts out of the GT parts bin and noticed that the ones dyed blue recently were splotchy blue and white. took a look at the truck, and my gt turned back to white!
it went from this:

- rc10gtbuildg.jpg (72.09 KiB) Viewed 1271 times
to this:

Any Ideas why?
I used the Sharpie marker for a dye source, I guess I gotta use good ol' rit when I re-do it.

I'm gonna guess that there was so much oil in the plastic the the sharpie didn't really penetrate. Try soaking in acetone first, and then soak in denatured alcohol. Finally do the detergent (oxyclean, or some such) soak and rinse. Either re-dye with the sharpie (don't let the kids see...

) or use real dye.
Just a thought...

a box of rit is like 2 bucks i think.. Joann's and Walmart always carry's all the colors. i just did some parts.. Boiled small amount of water, pourned into a metal bucket from home depot, poured 2 packages of dye in, soaked the parts overnight, and this stuff penetrated REALLY deep.. I did some old junk parts just for testing penetration level and this stuff went in deep.

if you want to match the blue of those arms i would only expose your plastic to the dye at like 15-20 second intervals. use a double boiler or something that you can put all the parts into and dip into the dye.
15-20 seconds, then rinse parts. repeat you are done when they are a little lighter than they seem they should be, but they will darken over time.
trust me, back in the 'old days' i over dyed a brand new rpm rc10t conversion and over the years its turned to freaking purple...

The parts that the dye job failed on came from a GT I parted out... they were oily green from being soaked in Blue Thunder nitro fuel for the majority of their life...
Another round of cleaning and they should take dye. The 'hoopty method makes sense but it may take a few attempts, maybe a few days apart, to be sure it takes.

Wow, I have never seen that happen on anything, and it definitely never happened on anything I dyed with marker. I feel bad that it turned out that way Anthony, but I am sure it is not because of the marker. I didn't want to say anything at first, but as soon as I saw the pics you posted of your truck I could tell that the parts looked very different from the ones I had done in the past. I have been able to get an exact match to RPM, and I have had some of the parts for several years with no signs of fading or dis-coloration. Maybe the fuel was the culprit like Temple said? I know I still have the bumper I most recently dyed with marker, it was done about three years ago, I will post a pic of it soon.
I'm really sorry it turned out that way, but it was a sweet build, and I'm sure you will find a way to make it work again.

Here are some pics I already have hosted. Pics are thumbnails.
This is pretty much when it was first done.
This is after it was at least a year old.

I just recently retired that bumper because it broke. It is almost all white now because of scratching, and general severe punishment inflicted by me, but still no signs of the dye doing anything funny. I will dig it out and get pic....
