Android TV boxes

Hey so I got a message from a good friend about this android mx tv box. It's like Apple TV but everything is free that you can watch on it.

My question is, does anyone have one? Does it get local tv too? Do you need one for each set? Can you install whatever you want on it?

Are there other better boxes? How can I tell a real one from a knock off?

wow thats alot of questions

i havent seen that box but we just unpluged from cable a month ago and i looked at alot of boxes like that and what i came up with is if you want to watch good stuff and up to date you have to pay .. but none i seen had local tv

we run a ps3 with crackel ( free and some newish stuff on it ) netflix, our dvd colection (over 400 now) , and torents for anything new on tv we want to see ( day after)

i dont watch news or sports so i dont know about that

also after we shut our cable off we still get about 8 channels with the cable conected to our dvd player

Can't help you with the Android box, but shutting the cable off was one of the best things we did. We have an Apple TV with Netflix and Hulu. I also do a lot of torrents for racing and movies and stream them to the TV via our iPad through the Apple TV. We just recently got an antenna (mostly so we could watch the Olympics) and I was amazed at how many over the air channels there were (granted we are in the LA market).

Interesting comments so far - we do have Apple TV and netflix as well. I made an HD antenna using youtube and it actually worked really well (I was amazed). But we can't cut the cord on a lot of the specialty channels and stuff because not only do I like it, the kids do too.

I guess I'm just wondering what the draw is for one of these boxes - is it primarily an Apple TV substitute? If so, it will be interesting to see how this market develops (if at all).

What I plan on getting in the near future is a Roku which is another very popular streaming media player.

Someone else showed me this which also looks interesting.

Here's an ad for the android box that I was looking at:

Very curious - but sounds like its just like apple tv, except content is free (which I like).
