Hi all, I am working on my kyosho beetle at the moment, its taken me a long and enjoyable experience building it with used and new parts. Now I am looking for a preferably a new thorp diff and CRP 1706 swing axles, I know they are the holy grail of upgrade parts for the kyosho. So if anybody can help, it would be much appreciated.

Wow the prices are sure high enough! But the price for the thorp is a price for a used buggy at least. But that is sure desirable!! These are hard to find. I was searching and found this

I just know that Johns has a lot of that stuff still. Fire them off an offer, I bet they would come down a bit. It sounds like it's all from a closed hobby shop and probably taking up room in the garage.

Those parts are tuff to find and John is tuff guy to bargain with. The price for the Thorp diff is high but okay, I have seen them go for $375 down to 125… The CRP CVD’s usually goes for around $75, but it was a while sins I saw any diffs and CVD’s up for sale.

Thanks Lars for the pics. I know 3 types of ball diff - this one that you showed - brass gear, one with nylon gears, same pitch as the standard kyosho diff and a rare NODIS diff that had Tufnell as the gear material of choice, now that is the real holy grail, I think, very strong and highly wear resistance.

John has sent me some pics. The first pic, I believe should fit, its the nylon type, not sure. He still has not given me detailed pics of that. I asked him to do so and we'll see what it is.

Lars - you have had experienced with these diffs - tested them and all - how good are they compared to the standard diff. Does the brass one wear out quickly, you got some that were used, how were the teeth on them. I know that nylon does not wear as quickly.

I might decide to get the $225 one, yeah John is hard to bargain with.

This one looks like the stock Kyosho Circuit 1000 gear diff.

The ball diffs I know about is:
Kyosho Works diffs that Kyosho made for the team drivers.
Dirt Burners 4630
MIP C-200 and C-400
NODIS
I have been told there where German company that also made diffs for the Scorpion but never seen one.

Holy Moly! Now that's all metal. Thanks Lars. Never seen this one before. Man these were built in very small quantities weren't they? Made for the serious racer and sold quite expensive. Now we have ball diffs in almost all RCs. I kind of like the idea of a ball diff cause it is more compact and has less moving parts to it.

Yes been searching ebay for months, no vintage ball diffs for kyosho circuit 1000 buggies.

Phin, I guess you are right, it seems to be the stock geared diff - that explains the low price

Lars, that kyosho works diff looks pretty cool I've never seen one. Here is the thorp diff and CRP brass counter gear I used in my scorpion. I was lucky enough to find this at a local hobby shop and was able to buy it dirt cheap

If I could, I would make the ball diff, but need to have a indexing head or rotary table to do so. Just a thought, I have the sherline lathe but no super precision parts like the rotary head. The thing is that these can be reproduced by a master machinist or simply with a help of a CNC setup.

That diff sure is nice. Still no word from John. Wish I had gotten into this vintage hobby a long time ago, been into it for an year now.

OK this is my ride, not finished or even half completed. The iconic sand scorcher body from tamiya and the best ladder chassis setup from kyosho! You will notice the door handle is aluminum, made it by hand and they look very real. The chassis has been shortened by 15mm to accommodate the tamiya wheel base.
