xx4 front axle??? different lengths from uj to cvd??

Question: Is it normal, when running the shiny CVDs that the dog bone end just barely engages the front dif cup? Ive got 2 rollers built, and the one using stock uj axles has the dog bones into the drive cups by a good 3/16". So, I can set alot of droop and still keep things moving.

The newer build, using shiny CVDs, has the dog bones just barely engaging the diff drive cups, so I have to keep the suspension droop to a minimum, reducing over all travel. Am I missing something? Different length of diff drive cups? Different carriers and spindles? It dont seem right at all.

Wrong cvd bone?

I got them in a lot of new and used parts, so no matching header cards or instructions. they were however assembled onto xx4 arms as a sub assembly. Kind of ticks me off because I cant use the fancy steel outdrive protectors on the plastic out drives. With stock UJ bones the protectors would be fine.

I know the fronts are quite rare....maybe they swapped in a set of rears onto front arms? I would measure them up against a set of rear bones.

I recently built a XX4 with shiny CVDs and I don't remember them fitting badly. Let me take a look/pic of mine when I get home tonight.

Front and rear are vastly different size, so probably not a mis match in that way. If time allows,, I too will snap a pic and show you guys what is happening. Pretty sure the bones are purpose made for losi drive cups because they dont fit anything else. Ive also got the greyish purplish light weight bones,, so perhaps a direct comparison is in order. I have to take both cars apart anyway,, because 1 is becoming a runner,, and its going to use the stock uj axles,, and it happens to be the car currently equipped with the CVDs...Its getting beefed up slightly with carbon stiffeners, and a carbon lipo strap for motor side shorty lipo. Hoping this will be a long term runner. Had been running a couple different yokomo buggies,, but those suck up rocks and pebbles way to easily. I need a set and forget it toy.

Pictures. First pic smooth plastic out drives, and stock UJ bones. Pins are in a good amount.

Image

2nd pic: plastic out drives with a ring cut into them. Presumably to lock in the steel outdrive strengtheners. Also, these are the CVD axles. Titanium, not shiny,, oh well. Notice how the pins are right at the edge. The steel outdrive strengtheners will not fit these CVDs,, because the pins locate past the grooves in the strengtheners.

Image

3rd pic: smoothe out drives, pictured with CVDs,, notice they do fit in the out drives a little better.

So,, different outdrives, and slight difference in length between UJ and CVD axles. Unfortunate, because 2 of the best upgrades for the car are not compatible with each other.

Are you running middle hole on the wishbone for the shock position?

Yes, middle hole on both cars. The threaded shocks are set up funny though. They allow more droop, yet are limited in up travel. The stock UJ bones are long enough to run inner hole on the wishbones. If I tried that with the CVDs, they would fall out for sure.

Ok cool. The manual doesn't show any spacers to limit droop, so that's not it. Are the shock ball joints threaded all way up, ie no thread showing on the shaft?

Are you running 0.6 shocks up front and not the 0.9 ones used on the truck front end?

Not sure about shock length. I was under the impression I could run droop at lower than level with wheels off the ground. Under full sag, full running weight,, with limited droop due to bone length, the sag would seriously cut into the over all travel. On jumps too the suspension would not drop very much. I dunno. This dosent make much sense. Im running the stock uj axles for now. I guess the real racers run their cars pretty low for handling, and just let the chassis get slapped around from jumps?? I think thats how we used to do it back in the zx5 days. But I always remembered the XX4s having "more"....
