Found this on eBay last week, forgot to post it up. I know it's a bit ghetto, but check out the rear spur...it looks like they are running it Radiant style. Never seen an optima modded this way...it gives me some ideas

Is the whole rear gear box changed / heavily modified not only the spur?

I think they cut it up leaving the lower half to hold the diff and arms, and probably have a chain running from the topshaft down to the diff and then to the front. Just assuming though

I'm wondering how it would work on say an ultima, run the lower chain style optima diff and run a sprocket on the topshaft. Short chain...poor mans upgraded box. It would of course need a different topshaft/spur and motor plate

It looks like that to me too. The chain seems to go around the top shaft.

Unfortunately, I was the first place looooser....and got outbid in the last 2 seconds. I thought it was really interesting to see how it was done, but I was more interested in the other parts to finish up my other project cars.

It went for $195 + $60 shipping. What made me bid was the fact that it had a ton of optima diff pulleys and several 48 pitch conversion sets. It came with a glass 10L, monster beetle and a messed up (modified) jrx pro.

ABC Hobbies' Team F&D chain drive transmission did something like that except I think they used a Dominator diff. Just as easy to do it with a Optima sprocket diff too. Sept. '89 issue of RCCA has an article on it and here's a pic of the prototype that I have saved.
