Hello, after a few cool club race with my OIN Rc10, I decided to race with a more challenging chassis: my rerelease Sand Scorcher

At first, I build it with a mechanical speed controller and no BEC, It was very very heavy, and almost impossible to drive on the track, it jumps like crazy and spin 180° at almost every turn.

This is how it was before: 4lb 15oz



Now the mods.

In stock form, the suspension is limited by the short rear shocks, I used the longer front shocks in the rear mounted on the rollbar.



In the frond I grinded the arm stoppers until I can use all the shock travel (on this picture, the left is modded, the right is stock)



As the rear roll bar is now supporting the shocks, I decided to reinforce it with an alloy rod betwen the roll bar and the rear motor housing.



To clear the rera shocks from the tire at full shock compresion, I had to widden the rear.
I made some axle with 5mm steel rod, and alloy wideners.

Very cool. I would run some 90 degree aluminum angle stock down the length of the chassis to help stiffen it up. Otherwise it will flex and you'll end up breaking your body.

This first version of the chassis is 3mm, in the second version (wich is 3mm too) I made long holes in the front to add some flex. I'm not very confident with the strenght of the rear bulkhead fixation, don't want to put too much stress on it.

Btw I don't use the ABS body or roll bar fixation anymore.

Then I made a V2 chassis with wider front track (+2cm, or approximatively 3/4 inch) and longer wheelbase (+1.5cm, 9/16)



Here is the widened front, with new longer tubes, 3mm stainless steel tie rods.



The front has been lowered with 5/16 plastic blocks.



The rear rims are modified, in order to use foam inserts with Hornet rere tires.



In front original RC10 rims with 8x5mm ball bearings and Proline Edge tires, the battery will take place in a RC10 battery cup.

I like your mods! Searching for vintage hop up parts is cool, but sometimes making your own parts is a lot funner! Nice work so far!

Making your own parts IS vintage.
I remember in the eighties, lots of upgrades were home made, even in high level races.

The body is a lexan repro from Kamtec, I think the original was from Parma.



The shock brace V2, with the rear body post and a place for the Esc.



Next the motor (nothing fancy ) and the "long stroke" rear shocks.



The optional ball diff from Tamiya.

All shocks have been modded to coilover spec. I first bought the CRP kit, but infortunately it doesnt work with the rereshocks (original shocks are 8mm, rerelease are 9.5mm). So I keep the springs and do what I can to fit them.



Then the oil...in front 30-35wt work well, but the rear is terribly heavy and the shocks are way too small.

I tried 30w, 35w, 45w 700cst, 3000cst and the good compromise seems to be around 1500cst .

With an oil that thick, it's important to have no air inside the shock and not too much pressure. So I decided to modify the shock "959 style" or "Super Champ Style".





It works very well now: here is a movie of an original SRB bouncing after a drop (not mine).

Weight is now 1800g, thats 400g lighter than before, with the same battery pack (NiMh). With a Lipo it could be even "lighter".

Thanks guys, probably my favorite project since my Rc10DS Graphite.

Some picture of the boy painted, the design is inspired from the fantastic 4wd Sand Scorcher of Shodog, I just added white stripes between the colors and changed the rear end from blue to copper.
