I used super diluted Rit dye to achieve the nylon look on my car. I conducted research through the Rit dye website which shows custom colors to find the shade that was close to what I needed.

I ended up mixing 1/8 teaspoon of yellow dye with 2 cups of water. Heated the mixture to approximately 180 degrees and dunked each shapeways part in the mixture for three seconds. Cold water rinse immediately then compared the shade to the AE parts.

If I do it again I will do a mixture of 1/16 teaspoon of yellow and 1/16 teaspoon of tan. The key to doing this is having a super diluted mixture that allows you to dunk the parts and then check the shade. You do this in increments to keep from over doing the color. The shapeways parts do take dye very easily.

Please note we have not ran a car with dyed parts so we are not sure how or if it will affect the durability. It should not but stranger things have happened.
I mixed a full packet of tan and a full packet of yellow, put them in a plastic Baggie so I could mix them easily, then scooped 1/4 teaspoon into 4 cups of hot water (double batch). I simply boiled it in the microwave, as the dye time is very very short

Once mixed, I left the parts in for about 10 seconds. It didn't look quite enough so i went another 10. I rinsed them in cold water, and they turned out pretty well. I think i will use less yellow next time. 8)

Arm Mounts as they arrive, steering dyed, original arm for comparison

And the final parts with ReRe arms for comparison

Btw, I would recommend tapping and reaming before dying 8)

Hi Gomachv,

Nice, they look like they were made in 91, NIP!

Cheers, Dave.

The bellcranks actually have a "MIP" color to them. I hope others will post their recipes too, for comparison

Ok, it appears we have come full circle. Many threads on whitening parts followed by best recipes for yellowing parts. My suggestion, for yellowing: leave them at a smoker's house for a few days.

 pretty much! I was going to try Reggie's super secret blend but decided to try Jakes first. When I get more parts I'll try the other and see if its any better

Hey Jeff, it's been more than four years and you may not remember this very well (and the pictures are gone now). Anyway, it seems that you mixed the two colors dry in a bag then pulled 1/4 tsp out for the hot water. Is that correct and would you still reduce the amount of yellow in the mix? thanks

Its been too long, I dont recall. Ill see if I have the pics saved somewhere. Photosuckit really hosed us. I will say, the tea method worked way better than the dye. Ive done several parts with tea and they turn out much more of a natural nylon color.

Thanks Jeff, no worries if you can't recall the details or find the photos.
I'd rather not use coffee or tea. I'm probably overthinking this (I do that a lot) but I worry about staining parts with what is essentially a biological substance; its chemistry might change over time or may even begin to grow mold. I think I'd prefer to use a more purely chemical dye in hopes the color will remain stable over time. I'd hate to look at the car one day only to find the arms have turned black or are covered with green fury mold -- like that long forgotten coffee cup I left in the garage last week.

Every time I've tried coffee or tea I have not liked how they turned out.

I've had better luck with RIT golden yellow in a VERY diluted mix. Like 1/8 teaspoon to 2 qts. of water. And the parts are only in the pot for a few seconds.

Updated the pics in the first post but they aren’t in any particular order
