Problem with Sanwa/airtronics super vortex 207h speedo

I'm trying to get this esc to work.
The manual is in Japanese, but I can just about follow the diagram.
When I try to configure the esc I get a solid red led that doesn't change despite
Trying to depress any of the buttons.
What does this mean?
I know there was a thread about the speedo somewhere on this forum but I want to
know if this is an error.
