Picked it up at a LHS that I had never been to before. Was only 149...until he showed me the upgrade rack and it ballooned to over 400 with taxes

But I'm really stoked to try out this fwd chassis. Going to do the usual lipo and brushless of course but wondered if anyone else has one of these?

I have a M05 with a Mini Cooper body.
It weighs a good bit more than I thought it would for its size, but it's got some git up -n- go.
Little sucker turns on a dime, too.
It's my 6-year old son's favorite of all the cars/trucks I have.

This is the one I bought - can't wait to build this thing! Got a ball diff and bearings for it, plus a stupid big / fast Castle CM26 9000 kv brushless motor for it

I have one that I haven't finished yet - I was looking for longer rear axles to push the rear wheels out where they belong. Found some mystery axles I think will work, but haven't tried them yet. I'm planning to paint it like a standard-issue US-spec '70s Rabbit, probably beige or brown.

Yeah, I would either find a way to space the rear wheels out, or trim the fenders back a bit.

I had that Tamiya VW when it was first released by Tamiya, on the old Racing Master pan chassis. Went like a bucket of stink with a Technigold driving the rear axle..... painted mine lime green single colour, last time I saw it, it was in a collector friend's place in New Zealand.

When they re-released the body (on the M05 chassis), I found a set of alloy wheels to suit it perfectly: they're m-chassis sized, with a different offset front-to-rear, so the rears would sit wider than the front. One of these days, I should get that body again, and finish the car..... but I DO NOT look forward to the paint job!!!!

I'd really love to get some BBS style wheels. I saw a pic of the original version and it seemed to look lower and also had a duckbill spoiler, which I like a lot.

I found a body for sale for this car on ebay - but is there anywhere you can still buy this body kit? If so, where? I was thinking of buying a spare shell for bashing.

You can change the wheelbase on a m05, you can choose between 210, 225 or 339mm. So there are tons of bodies on the market for these mini chassis, you just have to modify the wheelnase, except you choose a 210mm body. Just check Tamiya, HPI or ABC Hobbies... I just bought a Toyota Celica mk1 body for mine, from ABC hobbies.

Sweet! I just bought a CRX body off ebay that has light buckets built into it. I would love to build my mk1 Golf body just like you did here though too. So many options!

Out of the box there's too much plastik

I'm racing mine, so some options are a must-have, like for example bearings, oil shocks, Tamiya universals (YR or 3racing universals are crap), reinforced gear, alloy motor plate + heatsink and a better servo saver. Otherwise the car is out of the box great. The stock differential works fine on circuit with a lot of anti wear grease I have a spec-r diff lying here, have to try it.

So what kind of shocks come with it? I have my eye on a set of shocks for it but haven't pulled the trigger yet. Where's the best place to source parts?

I did buy a ball diff, motor plate and titanium screw set for it already.

also there is a big weight diffrance between the gear diff and the ball diff

It comes with friction dampers. TRF shocks are the best but not cheap... Yeah Racing shocks are a very good alternative...It's a TRF copy. You need the short version, 50mm.

I ordered the most stuff on ebay (RC Mart/Dinball).


PS: don't forget to shim the rear axle shafts

I should post some pictures (if I can find them...the car is in a box in a rather inaccessible place) of my FULL OPTIONS M-01M. The thing is mostly aftermarket parts Kose carbon chassis, Tech Racing gearboxes, loads of alloy...Honda S-MX Lowdown body.

I also have a fairly normally optioned M-02 Honda S800, plus a project car with the old M-01/02 Tech Racing 4WD kit (just missing one of their alloy gearboxes...) and a Kawada 4-shock conversion, plus a M-03M project car that's just missing some minor bits and electronics.
