Alternative transmission options for a 10T?

I just picked up an early 10T on Ebay (impulse buy) that has no transmission. A quick look around seems to indicate that a stealth transmission sells for approximately 2x what I paid for the truck, so in the name of cheapness, I want to explore other options.

One thing I'd like to avoid is cutting the tub to make something fit, so that I can revert to a stock rebuild in the future if I so choose. That said, what are my transmission options? Anything newer, like a T3 or T4 trans that will fit without massive modifications?

there have been a couple of guys that have converted to t2, t3, and t4 type transmissions, each of which has its own pitfalls and benefits. In most cases, guys will redrill the tub and cut a rectangular hole for the trans to fit in. then you need to retrofit some kind of trans brace and potentially modify the motor plate in some fashion.

unfortunately, the stealth trans is a desirable piece, so you have to keep your eyes open for one, or bite the bullet and pay the going rate.

One thing you can do kind of cheaply would be to use a 6 gear trans. while it won't have a slipper clutch, it will give you a trans you can use to drive the truck around. They are somewhat cheaper to find and are a direct fit, no holes to cut.

If the chassis you bought is clean, and you got it for a good price, I don't see why you can't pay $40-$50 for a good transmission.

Here are some optional 'direct fit' transmission options for your chassis:

Original '6' gear RC10 transmission

Stealth RC10 transmission

MIP RC10 transmission

A&L Lethal Weapon transmission

The '6 gear' is likely to be found for the cheapest price. The Stealth, MIP, and Lethal Weapon are likely to all be found for similar prices.

If the truck you found is complete and in good shape, don't be afraid to spend the $50 for a good used Stealth. It'll be worth it if you decide to drive it with a modern brushless setup.

You might try looking for a good roller with a transmission. You can get extra parts and the main component you need. Unfortunately prices have gone up.

The retail sticker that is still on my Stealth transmission box says $120. And that would be early 90s prices. Im sure they sold for around $70, but a $50 for a stealth transmission, original, is a good price considering the times.

Thanks guys, but this is necro thread. I posted that back in 2014. I've since secured a number of Stealth transmissions.

I also picked up a T2 without a transmission and I'm in the process of retrofitting a T5M mid-mount trans in.

This must have come to light due to "related threads"

Perhaps. I did see the other day that there's somebody retrofitting a B5M trans into a flat pan chassis. I'd hoped to be the first to retro a B5M trans into something, but I'm way too busy with other projects to actually get to it.
