Spin off of the Yo-Yo thread.... Toy Fads

Since seeing the Yo-Yo thread and living through the boom I started looking up Yo-Yo's again. Modern Yo-Yo's are quite a bit different then I had as a kid. Upon digging out my Yo-Yo's I found a big tube of Pogs.

What other toy fads were you big into or still have, Yo-Yo's, Tops, Pogs, Skip-it, Chia Pets etc?

Chia Pets? Really? Not me, but I guess some might have done that sort of thing back then.

AFX and Aurora tracks and cars were big for me. Hockey cards and comics of course, they are not overly toys, but still fun.

Like most of us here, I am sure we spent out time outside having fun. Sprinklers in the summer, going to the pool, fishing etc. Playing hockey on the backyard rink in the winter.

Primary school was where the biggest toy crazes hit in waves every year. In a never ending cycle through seven years it was either "Marble season" or "Yo-Yo" season. In 1981 this cycle was interupted by Rubik's Cube, Pyraminx, Ball, Hexagon, Snake and every other variation you could name. About 1983 in came the Nintendo Game and Watches.

These days kids aren't allowed to take anything to school for fear that it might make other kids jealous and steal their stuff. Plus schools don't want angry parents at the gates. They can't climb trees or play games like Red Rover or Jailbreak. At the school where my Mum still teaches, the Jungle Gym, see-saws and other playground equipment has been removed. Booooooooo!

I forgot about my old Nintendo Game and Watch handhelds. They are worth a pretty penny these days.

I still have the Game an Watch Multi Screen Donkey Kong II, and the Zelda ZL-65. Very fun!

I can't remember the name of the flexible plastic track, it was made by hot wheels I think.

You would slide many pieces together and it had an electric or hand wound acceleration gate. Loops, straights, figure eights with crashes.

Of course the Rubiks cube, good mention there. What about the train set our dad's built for us and unveiled on Christmas day.

I was also big into Tyco/Tomy AFX as a kid. I still have my old set from the 80's in a box somewhere. I must have kept all my toys as I still also have a micro machine van that folds out to create a whole city to play with micro machines.

Darda cars were also in for a while, early lego technic and K'nex.

I also had a Brio wooden train set.

Garbage Pail Kids? Madballs? The neighbor kid had everything. NES, GameBoy, the GI JOE base, Omega Supreme and Optimus Prime. He even had the handlegrip black box crank rev sound bike thingy.

Never saw him rodding his FX-10 around the driveway though! HA!

We had Teknics (spelling) and Romagons. Remember Capsella?

I collected both. I had gotten rid of both, but replaced my GPK collection a few years with this lot off ebay.

I had seemingly every toy in the 80s. The entire den of the house was a dedicated play room. With that being said, I can't pick out one thing over another. Instead I'll list what I still have.

Legos
Construx
TMNT stuff
He-Man stuff
Matchbox/Hot Wheels cars
Micro Machines
Mad Balls
Comics
My rock collection
M.U.S.C.L.E
Army Ants
Food Fighters

I sure do! I also used Construx a lot and an Erector Set, never really got into legos though. I also remember playing with Atari then Nintendo, He-man and GI Joe action figures as well as the little green, plastic army dudes and the little pink muscle men. AFX slot cars, Record Breakers - World of Speed, HO, American Flyer and Lionel trains and RC cars/trucks/boats were really the primary focus of my play time, however.
