Spray paint choices

To sum up the post below. I used a duratrax rattle can to paint with and it was horrible. Tamiya color cans are gone at my LHS. What can I use in place since i dont want to make the jump to an airbrush system yet.

So with tamiya color paint no longer being sold at my LHS, I decided to try out one of those duratrax can. I gotta say im sorely disappointed in it. being used to the tamiya color now, I knew what to expect and painting when pretty easily with the first 2 colors (black then Silver). When I got to to putting on the 3rd color (Red), I its just hard to put into words. The volume from the can was way too much, I tried to move the can faster but then it wasnt painting enough and you could see through parts of the paint job. I go for another quick pass and all of a sudden its now starting to show through the other layers of paint I did. Since I was doing the wing in this color too. The effects of its spraying were pretty bad. Its appearance is really gritty (yes I shook the hell out of the can before using) after the first pass, I could still see light passing through all over. So I did another one and it just caused lots of run and there is still light coming through. Worse of all, the color barely matches the can, Its a red all right but a good bit darker than it should be compared to the can.

I'm trying to get better at this painting bit but I can work with these. Yes i could switch over to an airbrush but im not ready to bit the bullet to get a decent setup.

Sounds like it was a translucent paint, like the Pactra candy colors and such. They are put down and then backed with an opaque color- silver, white, etc. What is the name of the red you used?

tamiya color PS-5 (black)
tamiya color PS-12 (silver)
Duratrax Metalic Red. DTXR4264 / PC264

maybe this one is suppose to be backed with something still doesnt get around the issue of how it sprayed out.

So you used Duratrax over Tamiya? I would not expect that to go well to be honest.

After a little digging, the Duratrax basically IS the old Pactra, Duratrash partnered with testors to bring it to production. That means it is a laquer for one, so stay away from acrylics with it. My experience with Pactra metallic and pearl colors is that they are just a tint and need a backing. Also the metallic will have a rough feel because of the metal flakes in it.

Well that blows. I haven't bought any paint in a good while so I didn't even realize it. When did that happen? Apparently I've been asleep... :?

Testors discontinued it early this year or so, but the duratrax picks up where they left off apparently- some colors are even named the same lol

Good to know. I find Tamiya to be a bit smoother anyway.

Just bought some "Spaz Stix" paints. FL Yellow, FL Blue, and White. We'll see. I have only used the Tamiya and Pactra paints in the past. With the RTR and pre-"painted" bodies, who in the hell needs a quality paint anymore? Right? Wuuf. I'll report back.
