Graphite chassis restoration help

Hi All,

I have in my stash of bits a very clean Graphite chassis (6-gear). It has minimal scratching underneath and is generally very tidy. I would like to make it perfect though

What is the best procedure to tidy up the bottom? Should I sand and paint with clear auto lacquer/clear coat, or would that make it too shiny?

Any advice would be happily received :D

If shiny is unwanted, use a dull clear. Sand, spray, sand, spray, sand, spray, sand. May take several coats to get all the scratches out but it'll be right on.

Is this for a shelfer? If you will be running it, I'd by an automotive grade clear cote. If it is a shelfer, I'd go with a spray can. Since a shelfer will not be seeing any action, durability is not an issue. Now, if you want it done right and last for 100 years, go with the automotive clear anyway.

when i do them, i try to use as little paint material as possible. mainly just because of the weight issue. i would sand the entire chassis first. any small scratches and scuffs should come out relatively quick. then, if your gonna use an aerosol clear, spray some into a cup, and brush the clear into the bad/deep scratches. the objective is to build the clear up higher than the chassis surface (you might have to do it a couple times). after your done with that, block sand those areas down until it's all smooth. then put a coat of whatever clear you want to use (gloss, semi-gloss, satin, flat, etc.) on it. you might be able to see the scratches yet, but you won't be able to feel them.

just my $.02.
