YellowDatsun's lucky find of the century.

20 some years ago I used to race an RC10, with an Airtronics XL2P radio. I ended up taking a 20 year hiatus from RC cars until 2 years ago, when I bought a 4x4 LCG Slash. When I bought the Slash, I saw that the RC10 Worlds car had been re-released. I was completely unaware until that point. So for the last 2 years I had been wanting one, and seeing the re-release of the stock RC10 made me want one of those as well. A couple months ago we were in Oregon, where there's no sales tax, and a local hobby shop had a good deal on an RC10 Worlds car re-release. So I bought it. I painted it to match my old car:

But that's not what this thread is about..........................I live in Phoenix, and was over in San Diego attending a wedding for my girlfriends cousin. I love my new Worlds car, and even though I do drive it, I don't want to beat it up. So I've been wanting to get another one to actually drive. Reading threads on here I was also toying with the idea of doing a wide-track car. Being bored while on our "vacation", I decided to check craigslist on my phone. I actually found a nice RC10T for $50, which I figured would be perfect for a wide-track buggy build. I met up with the guy and purchased it.

While we were talking about the RC10T, the guy says that he also has "one of the gold cars". I asked if he wanted to sell it, and he said yes. He went back home to get it, and met me back at the mall parking lot. What he showed up with was an "A" stamp Edinger car, with the original box, the original manuals, a charger, and....get this.....an Airtronics XL-2P just like I used to have. It seemed like fate to me. I mean, what are the odds I'd find this by chance on vacation in another city? I asked what he wanted for it, and he said "$125", so I bought it.

Sooo, the gold one will be restored to match the box art, and the black one will be my wide track racer (likely not actually race though).

Does anyone know who made these shock caps? There's a cir-clip under the reservoir so they can be disassembled. BUT, there's no name or stamping on them anywhere. The shock bodies look like standard RC10 stuff.

Been doing some work on the black chassis over the past couple days. Put on Ti turnbuckles, RPM front A-arms, a metal gear servo, and got a plethora of blue anodized hardware. I also cut the rear bulkhead to match the re-re unit, so it now fits Lipo packs. I had to drill two new holes for the forward battery holder, since the Lipo packs are longer than the old 6 cell NiCd's.

Here's a look at the underside of the piggyback shocks:

Good stuff !

The shock caps should be by Progressive Suspension, same ones that make bike shocks. They haven't done rc shocks for years tho. Actually they could be Integy also, not sure how to tell

Why the buggy wheels and tires on a truck chassis?

Because I've always thought the trucks looked really stupid with the wheels so far outside the body. Hence why I love my Traxxas Slash.

Reading another thread, I just realized that my car was earlier than I had thought. It has the black heim joint steering ends. I assumed that those were an incorrect later addition by the owner, and I was about to replace them with the white ball cups, but now I know to keep them. My box also shows the silver shocks on it.

I know the aluminum steering parts are incorrect, I have the right parts ordered.

Your blue shock caps are Progressive Suspension reservoirs from the late 90's early 2000's. The black ball joints were never oem.

Nice finds btw! 8)

Are we sure on this? They are indeed on the box pictures. It was talked about in this thread:

http://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=11914

So that brings up another question.........should I restore the car to what was actually sent out, or box art? I assume from a collectors standpoint it should be restored to what was actually sent out.

yes, boxart does not reflect actual kit contents. the black heim ends are not factory parts.

Not sure why my pics are coming out so crappy. But anyways, the gold pan cleaned up quite nicely. Aside from cleaning off the dirt, debris, velcro, tape, and other junk, I'll be keeping the chassis in "last raced" condition. So I'll keep the old speed control, and clean up the old motor and re-install it. I've never heard of "Race Prep", but I'll keep it anyways.

Here's the car pre-cleaning:

and the car after being cleaned:

My Protech body arrived today, and stock wheels and tires should also be arriving today. Then the body will need to be painted, so I'll need to find the closest color I can to the stock orange box color. I know some people mix paints to get the color as close as possible, but I'm just not that patient.

Just got back from the hobby shop, and without seeing this post, coincidentally that is the can of paint I bought!
