Melted diff gear on Worlds Car

I put a Castle 3800 in my worlds car and ran it a little on the street , Wheelies at will ! We went to the beach so I put some paddle tires on it. After about 5 minutes it stopped running, took the trans apart to find that the diff ball holes were destroyed and the center of the diff was spinning inside itself, it became 2 pieces.the gear portion and the flat center. What do I have set wrong and what can I do to prevent it from happening again ?

was it your diff that was slipping or your slipper that was slipping? Might be hard to tell now that its apart but you really need your slipper to slip before the diff does. Makes the slipper pads take the heat over the diff assy...

Exactly what Klavy said. When it's assembled, hold both tires from spinning and try to spin the spur gear. If the slipper but turns, the diff is slipping. If the nut stays in place, the slipper is working properly. Once you run it and get the slipper where it feels right, recheck it and make sure the diff is still tighter than the slipper

Exactly what GoMachV was saying

. I was out looking for the link to the thread that was just discussing it to link it to it but Jeff came in and re-stated what he said in that thread also.

These guys have it right. I nuked a diff gear on my JRX because I wasn't running a slipper and a dumb low turn trinity back in the day. It also helps to set the torque in the sidewinder with the castle link so you don't nuke parts.

Definitely sounds like the diff was slipping, I melted a diff gear on my GT2 once, couldn't here it slipping with the motor going. Also, a lot of guys that run castle stuff are under the impression that they need to crank the slipper locknut down all the way.
Seen it over and over again at the LHS and they would come in wondering why they broke transmission gears, CVD's, etc.

Same here. Mostly the reply to why they did it was because it wasn't wheelying and they wanted it to wheely. Gotta admit that its somewhat cool to see wheely machines once in awhile but it doesn't do
that much for me.

You can *definitely* hear a diff slipping while running the car. Positively 100%. So if it makes no noise, it's likely the slipper, they are much quieter.
As for the locknut, if you are running a high grip clay or carpet track, they are correct. The slippers main use is to allow the car to get traction on loose dirt. This is why they make slipper-removal kits, which I have in 2 of my cars that race on clay.

Make sure you use the proper greases, black grease on the main balls will almost always lead to failure.

Sounds like some people who need to invest in certain Tamiya 'wheelie' models instead of cars designed to try to keep all 4 wheels on the ground

I've never had an issue with a slipper locked out, or removed, while running a clay track.

My guess is on the clay track your diff is set so the tire grip would be lost before the diff slips. With modern sticky tires and powerful brushless motors the diff slipping would likely quickly cause catastrophe as it would likely overheat and smoke quickly.
