Why asymetric steering bellcranks?

Howdy yall

I've had this one on top of my head a few times but never got to ask... but as I'm working on getting the LXT ready for action in May, it comes back to the surface again:

why the steering bellcrank asymetry on the first-gen losi steering bellcrank design? What is the obvious bit I'm missing here? Why the off-center hole and the longer left bellcrank?

that's always bugged me. the only thing that comes to mind is it's for ackermann geometry.

mmh... that certainly influences ackermann angles, but in an asymetric way... :shock:

Ok i thought it was quite obvious for everyone here fellowers ... and that i was dumb :shock: so i never asked :roll:

Possibly for roundy round racing ? Or someone made a mistake and set the machine up wrong ?

My thoughts were that they optimized it for a centered servo, which moved the crank over a bit, and putting the cranks too close would not be optimum. By offsetting both the sweep is somehow corrected with the geometry of the longer input side. I have NO idea if this is why, not any proof, but it was always my feeling

My RIGHT bellcrank is longer. :roll: ha ha

When I got my JRX2 I also noticed this. I looked around at aftermarket / period "hop up" steering kits and they did not seem to be asymmetrical, further intriguing me. Maybe it's one of those Losi "one eye covered" inside jokes?

I think it was because of the original servo saver bendy arm setup. It may have been a work around to extend the the bendy arm and move the hole forward in the rack as they may have found the equal length drag link / driven bendy link resulted in too easily broken bendy links. Butt I’m only spitballing here. I think this flawed design results in the car having a tighter left turning radius. Goofy as hell. :D

"The JRX2 originally only had a flexible steering arm as a servo saver (not such a great idea). I wanted it to be as long as possible to reduce the strain (more travel) when hit. Since the arms were offset only one could be that long. I would do many things differently in retrospect! I was at the beginning of my learning curve at that time."
